  • Airconditioner condensation?

Yesterday, my wife picked me up from work and I noticed a trickle of water on the road underneath the car from the drivers side, which I put down to condensation from the airconditioner. Later that evening I saw quite a bit of water on the driveway which again I put down to condensate.

Just to be certain, I check the car this morning and no puddle. I was starting to think it might be a leak from the washer bottle. But I discounted that as the washer additive has a distinct strong smell. Checked coolant level and it was okay - half way. (Hey, I just realised, where's the radiator cap?)

Tha aircon pipes run on that side of the car, underneath the washer bottle, so I presume the condensation box is on that side too. Can anyone confirm?

My wife says the aircon was working fine and was cool, so I don't think there may be anything wrong with the regulator. The thing is that is a fair bit of condensate that I noticed and it wasn't particularly hot or humid in Melbourne yesterday.

Anyone care to comment? How much condensed water should there be? (Might be nothing of course)

One other question. What is that large grey object immediately underneath the windshield washer filler inlet? Looks like a cover of sorts.

I have noticed a fair amount of water comes from mine too even when it doesn't feel humid. If I look at the driveway after I have pulled into the garage there is almost always a trail of large drops about every 20cm. Waiting for the garage door to open usually leaves a large puddle. Mum's Passat is the same so I'm not worried.

I always have the climate control on Dual - Auto - 22C both zones.

Nothing to worry about, just water from the evaporator drain tube. Idling for even a short time can leave a surprisingly large puddle.

Save it and use it to top up batt or wifes iron

Something interesting I noticed having parked the R outside last night on a friends very steep driveway was that quite a large pool of condensation formed somewhere down in the front lip. Once I backed out this morning it left a decent sized stream along their driveway as it drained out. Car is normally garaged overnight and is normally parked on a flat surface. I get some condensation but nowhere near as much as this.
