  • RNS510 cost?

What is the cost of the RNS510 and installation from dealer to an already bought Golf?

  • #2
I was quoted $3623 for the RNS 510 + $479 for the Media Device Input + $340 for installation from Wangara VW in Perth. I don't think I will be going ahead with that somehow...

Check with the local APR dealer as they can access them through HP probably cheaper then that.

Also the new firmware changes the A units to B so you should be able to use the new MDI interface which is cheaper. Installation should be ~1 hour if you've done a few for the RNS 510 and ~1 hour for the MDI depending on where you want it located but the install probably includes some cables as well.

Thanks so the RNS510 can't be had for much less?

Anyone actually installed one of these after market copies and can say that it's pretty much the same?

Around $2200 landed from the Czech Republic.

They're nowhere near the same and it depends on what you want, whilst the newer units are getting better they all suffer from many annoying problems and reliability is an issue. But you get what you pay for and it's clear with these units.

The RNS 510 full integrates into the car including the MFD with music info and navigation directions, the sound quality is excellent for a stock head unit and the display quality great as well (the price on a screen the same quality as the RNS 510's (sunlight readably) is around $600-700 to buy hence why the cheaper units don't use them).

There is a heap of info over at golfmkv.com in the Australian forum so it's best if you read up on the RNS 510 and the aftermarket units and make up your mind based on those threads.

In fairness, as a WD6050 owner, I think the RNS-510 is probably better (never actually seen one). Just not $2000 better. (Based on buying from Czech Rep inc. Bluetooth).

I haven't had any problems whatsoever with my unit - never needed a reset. I have done a couple of small cheap mods to it to improve it's bluetooth performance and make the button lighting blend in with the rest of the car, but that's just me - most wouldn't bother.

As Maverick has pointed out, perhaps the biggest downfall with the Chinese knockoff is the visibility of the screen in direct sunlight.
