Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

My previous 2006 GTI used 3 to 4 litres between services , it had 75K's when i got rid of it.

My new GTI ( pirelli ) has just over 10K's and hasn't needed a top up.
I would say that some inprovement has been made in the piston ring set up.

As you say, it seems to vary rather a lot from vehicle to vehicle. Both mine (2.0 TFSI petrol and 2.5 TDI) use close to zero oil between changes. But IMO VWA claiming that 1l/1,000km is not excessive oil usage is just taking the pi$$ ! I think 1l/5,000km is excessive and an indication that there is something wrong (and I wonder if an engine burning that much oil would pass the latest emission levels too ? )

IIRC I haven't heard of very many of the "vigorous running-in" brigade compaining about excessive oil consumption, maybe that style of initial driving helps the rings get a better seal ?

i think the way people drive in the first 15.000kms has abit to do with it..imoa the oil shouldnt be dropped at the 7,500km first service, ones that have come in with oil consumption issues that have had the oil dropped at 7,500 seem to far exceed the ones who havent ( more prevelant in the 2.0ltr GTI engine ) just what ive witnessed any way. but VGA havent sent us saying anything to condradict my opinion. from what mates of mine have said ( who work at HQ of other major manufactures ) told me that the oil in the engine when delivered to the dealership has "running in
properties and shouldnt be dropped until the first interval service. ( in VGA's case 15,000km) as they've found it can effect the bedding in of the rings and cause oil consumption issues.. im not sure on the relevance to VGA's engines but i found the information interesting

I dropped my oil at 7500 and have pretty well zero oil consumption and never have to top up in between services (consumption is only a few mm at most over 6 months measure with VCDS). The manual specifies more frequent oil changes under certain conditions and the manual also details the correct running in procedure.

Follow the manual and you can't go wrong, Volkswagen puts the manual in the car for a reason.

Not that redneck snowmobile website again .

Find me 10 other websites that recommend the same thing.. funny how this one always comes up.

It's been done to death but best way to run in a new car is drive it normally without redlining it (but without babying it), varying the revs up and down the range. So best no to drive straight on the highway but seems the first 50km are the most important.

I also change the oil every 7,500km.
