Mk V oil consumption ??

Hey guys,

Just curious, all the Turbo Mk V GTI owners here in the UAE are reporting quite excessive engine oil consumption, which the VW dealer is trying to convince them is normal.

What experiences have you guys had ??

I have a couple of customers whose GTIs use a bit of oil but my own goes between 7,500 km services without a top up.

My GTI uses quite a bit of oil too...

I think its normal mate. However, recently I did an oil change and used ELF 5w40 and the level has been pretty steady 5,000kms later.

My low oil level light comes on after 7,500 - 8,000kms after each service. once topped up, i'll do me till the next service.

VW Dealer told me it's normal as oil is burnt during ignition and start up. Not to sure if I believe him though.

I'm up to 51,000km's and it's been as regular as clockwork.

Try using a different oil.

I have found some are prone to burning more than others in the same engine and same usage.

So far (only 6,000Km), the 2.0 TFSI engine (same as Golf GTI) in my Skoda has used zero engine oil.

Some do use oil, some don't. I haven't heard any convincing explanations why, beyond running in with lots of accelerator pedal may bed the rings in better, leading to less oil consumption (and not every one agrees with that theory, either ).

Mine used oil up to about 7000km and has not used much since and i'm at 41,000 now.

sorry for the bump but mine has used 750ml after 6000km @ 35,000km... not sure when the light comes on but I just topped it up as the Oil Level was about 2-3mm away from the Min mark on the Dipstick.

Hopefully the 1l Top Up bottle I bought would last me till the next service but I highly doubt so. Is there a recommended guideline before VW will recognize it as a fault?

There's a line in the owners manual stating normal consumption. It used to be a litre per 1000 miles in the UK.

Mk2 Golfs used to take a lot of miles to run in. They would get more better and better over time.

I am a firm believer in running in 'with purpose' rather than just getting in and driving. Long drags under load up hills is best.

I think you would struggle to get a motor out of VW unless the exhaust looked like that of a steam train.

It's a litre per 1000kms in Australia. It's in the manuals as well.

Thanks guys... I guess I'll just keep a close watch. Still my first 6000km in the GTI, only bought it at 30,000km in Oct.

Mine uses around 1.5L between the 15,000 service intervals.

the oil level warning comes on after using a litre of oil..there a 4.8 litre sump ( inc oil filter)

looks like mine is normal then... I just think its abit stupid that I would have to top up Oil twice in between the recommended Service.

But looking at my cars service receipts from the previous owner, it looks like if you bring your car in with low engine oil they will top it up for Free under Warranty.

im pretty sure we do...the 2.0ltr GTI engines seem to be abit more prone to using oil compared to say the 2.0ltr diesel from the golf 5. all the range ( commercial and passenger ) seem to use oil in between services in varying amounts.
