  • Comfortline Tyres

    Hi All,

Just wondering what sort of a run people are getting from their Goodyear NCT tyres. The fronts seem to wear on the insides well before the outsides are worn - could be an alignment problem ?
All 4 are pretty knackered at 50k. Am considering trying the Michelin XM1+
What are your experiences ? Did you replace with more NCT's ?

    Cheers

Mate, 50k is very good mileage,
you could do much worst with some other brands. When ever I get 50k out of the tyres I buy the same unless the originals wouldn't have grip or were too noisy. I pump mine to 36PSI in summer and up to 40PSI in winter bit less for the rear ones.

      Maybe 50k is good ?
This is the first car I've had for over 10 years without low profile tyres.
I was looking forward to the big mileage I have heard about from people with "non performance tyres"

I've got to agree with Transporter on 50K out of a set of tyres, especially on a FWD car How many k's are you expecting to get mate. Driving style, tyre pressures, regular rotation, correct alignment and balancing, and the type of terrain your driving on, will all have an effect on how well they will wear. All I can say is that I've had front wheel and rear wheel drive cars and have followed the recommended procedures to get the maximum life from the tyres but I have never managed much more than around 40K from any of them, most of which have been top brands and recommended for the vehicles. If you can get 50k out of a set of tyres like the standard Goodyears' fitted to the Golf Comfortline you're doing very well and it also shows that the car itself must be pretty good mechanically as well. If you want to improve the handling you could go to a 17" with a lower profile which I can tell you makes a huge difference. My son just had a set of 17's fitted to his Comfortline with a set of 215/45/17 Kumho Ecsta 'Sevens' tyres, the ride is still very good, handling has improved heaps and these tyres are whisper quiet compared to the Goodyears. The original Goodyears had only done 20K and still looked like new, the question is how many k's will the new tyres last for ?

It could be the 1/2 of that what would you get from the original Goodyear tyres.
          But you probably expect that.

We managed to get just over 30K from a set of Kumho Solus 14" on a '93 Laser, was fairly happy with that because the Laser's do tend to chew them a bit. Only time will tell on the Golf, but I still think they are a much better engineered car so hopefully by following the correct procedure we should see reasonable life from the new tyres

Fitted a set of Michelin Energy XM1+ tyres today. They seem to be much quieter and a bit smoother in the ride.
Time will tell how they go !!

The Kumho Ecsta's rank pretty poorly in the tyre tests (generally down the bottom end of the pack) and reports from owners on golfmkv have the grip levels dropping a lot as they wear. But you're paying half what you would for another tyre so they could be replaced earlier if they start having traction issues. Looks like they will last a while as the treadwear rating is quiet high and there are a few owners with 15k+ on them now.

A lot depends on your driving style as well, these tests they do don't really mean a great deal to me to be perfectly honest because I have had some expensive Top Brand tyres fitted to cars in the past and even though they have been recommended for the vehicle the tread life has been very poor considering the high price per tyre. As I said earlier time will tell and obviously if they don't wear well and start to lose their edge earlier than expected then I'll just have to replace them with something else, or if the k's travelled aren't too bad then get another set of the same fitted.

You're looking at it from a different perspective, I'm not interested in tyre life but in getting the best performance tyre that I can for my dollars, tyre life is way down my list especially as tyres deteriorate with age, a tyre will lose around 15% of it's braking performance after 8 months.

Having said that both the CSC3 and the F1 Asymmetrical which are top ranked tyres both have long wear ratings, really comes down to driving style as you said and how much rubber you like to leave at the lights

I was very happy with my NCT5s, having gotten 60K out of them. They would've still been good for another 2-4K, except for a puncture. Wasn't much point in repairing, I thought. ...had a very good life anyway.

Always had them inflated to 38-40psi which wore them much more evenly. Before, they tended to wear on the edges. Except for the rears which wore on the inside due to the negative camber.

Replaced with NCT5s again. Aiming to get 70K+ this time around!

Nice to see the Kumho's still managed to get into 7th place ! Either way at least it's not last on the list

                          for wear cant beat coopers

Hi, may find that cooper make a size that would fit a transporter, if so you can't beat the mileage. The set on my Toyota Hilux have 100,000 km on them and are looking good for at least another 10,000. Don't cost that much either. Have found traction on wet bitumen sketchy at times though (grip great on dirt, wet or dry)
