Rear seats in Golf

Hi all... More questions from me about the golf. I also asked this in the polo section. I apologise in advance for what would seem like silly questions!

I had a look at the polo at the dealers - the rear seats would not fold down totally flat. I didnt get a chance to try the same with the golf. I have since learnt that removing the headrests gives a little more flatness for the polo...

The question i have is... Do the golf rear seats fold down totally flat? I ask this because i often do camping/festivals with only one passenger and a whole lot of gear. Plus, more room for fitting in flat pack furniture and goodies from you-know-where. More room in the rear means i could also take bikes on camping trips without the need for roof racks.

Im trying to get as many good reasons as i can to decide if the added price of the golf is really worth it (and a totally flat rear seat would be one of those reasons!)

No they don’t fold flat.

You may be better off considering a Honda Jazz (instead of the Polo) or a second hand Mazda 6 (instead of the Golf) if load flexibility is a priority for you.

I feel you should be considering something in the mid range size (not small) IMHO if you want room for bikes and camping stuff and DIY furniture cartons, I would suggest a small wagon because you won't get a lot in a Polo, Golf or even a Honda Jazz for that matter. Let's face it they weren't built for it and you will more than likely only cause damage to it trying to get bikes in and out. I don't know what your $ budget is but I'd be looking for a good used station wagon of some sort dare I say a Mazda 6 or the like, it sounds like it would suit your needs a whole better than a small hatchback.

My .02 cents worth anyway.

If you never have more than two people in the car (this is key), a hatchback IMO is just as good as a sedan in terms of carrying items. Obviously a station wagon has more room but with the seats folded down you still get a respectable amount of room which may be enough for your needs.

I have moved house and was surprised what I could fit in the little Polo with its back seats down - my dad has a ute and I only used it for really bulky things.

If I were you, I would go to the dealer, get them to bring a golf and polo out and pull the seats out so you can see the space that you get and how flat the seats lie. That way you can see how much room you have and if the seats lie flat enough for your liking. If they know you want to buy they should have no problems at all in doing this for you. If they refuse, then go elsewhere

Have you considered the Skoda Octavia wagon? They have a runout sale on at the moment on the previous model and it's essentially a Golf Plus (model we don't get here) and with similar features and better build quality.

How do they compare price wise to the Polo or a Golf Mav ? Not sure what the $ budget is here, Jetta wagon might be a bit dear, and Passat wagon would probably be well out of the equation.

I have been renovating for the last 12 months and the golf has worked fine carrying flat packs from you know where. The back seats do not fold flat but it has not been a problem
It only has 1.5M of space in the rear but it can carry full suspension mountain bikes with the front wheels off (quick release anyway).
Only time I had to get a delivery was for a 50 inch TV.

I have never had a problem fitting anything in my Golf even though they seats dont fold flat.

surely it does.

if so the base you sit on folds up then you fold the back down,
IMO that is pretty damn flat, more so then majority of cars i have owned.

But otherwise the honda Jazz would the key here for you, but it sure ain't no vw.

Sorry guys, not really interested in anything but a vw golf or polo... ive done my research on all the brands listed here: honda, mazda and skoda (plus toyota and peugeot!!) and the only one i would even consider over the golf or polo is a corolla.

i dont need anything bigger than a golf to tell you the truth - wagons arent my thing and station wagons moreso, they are just too big. If you can fit full sussers in the back with wheels off, or some taller flat packs from ikea thats all i need... roof racks may be a good option for camping gear.

A trip to the dealer to get them to show me how flat their rear seats go is in order this weekend.

We dont get Jetta wagons do we?

You're right, we don't get the wagon I've seen what I thought was a Jetta wagon but it must have been a Passat. I've never even bothered to look until a few minutes ago to see if VW did a wagon in the Jetta here in Oz, but according to the VWA site they obviously don't.

A bit cheaper then the equivalent Golf to buy the skoda wagon. Fit and finish is good and the car is around the same dimensions other then the extra overhang (which adds around 300mm from memory).

Having moved interstate in the Golf twice now + plenty of trips to buy swedish furniture etc I can say the Golf is great for lugging things around.

Because I am also bored as ***** (my gf who lives with me is overseas on holidays) I decided to try something out just then...

You won't ever get the seats flat because the are mounted higher than the boot floor. If however, you remove the back seats base, it makes them go near as flat and you gain heaps of extra room as the seat backs angle down as opposed to angling up a fair bit (when they are resting on the base).

It takes literally 30secs to pop it out (after you work out the clips for the first time) and 1 min to put back in.

I love the Golf Wagon, it looks so cool. I'd buy a GTI version in a flash
