    Guys,

I hear this weird clunking sound every time I turn my steering wheel to the left.. Its like a continuous clicking sound to say the least, and only occurs when I turn the wheel to the left.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Alf.

If it occurs when moving it may be a cv

I can only notice it at really low speed, 10km/hr. Once going at faster speeds I cannot hear it or feel it through the steering..

Definitely sounds like a cv problem...happens a lot with older cars (obviously the cv's get worn) and you can hear it when you lock your wheel and turn in reverse. What's the noise like, is it a click-click-click-click or does it sound more...heavy (for lack of a better word ) than that? Ie something metal smashing against something metal?

Dose the sound only happen when you are moving, or at standstill too?? Is it standstill only? May be a power steering pump problem, or c/v's if it happens when moving.

There is no power steering pump, the Golf 5 uses an electromechanical steering system.

"The electromechanical power steering is an electrical, power steering with speed-dependent servo effect (servotronic), which is activated only when needed and working completely without hydraulic components. The advantage compared with a hydraulic power steering is that cars equipped with electro-mechanical steering consume less fuel, while offering new comfort and security features: Active recovery of the steering wheel to its neutral position improves steering feeling around the neutral point, wind compensation helps the driver when driving in cross winds or when driving on a path that is tilted sideways. It is for each car’s engine and equipment personalized steering force supplements also contributes to an outstanding handling and feedback. These extra features have been able to be, thanks to styrdonet connected to the CAN data bus.
In many of the Volkswagen passenger car models included electro-mechanical steering in the standard equipment. Electromechanical power steering reduces the cars fuel consumption by 0.2l/100km."

if the sound is constant, disregarding which way you turn your wheel, it could perhaps be the water pump on the blink??

                  just a thought....

Can you determine if the sound coming from the engine bay area or inside the cabin? If inside the cabin, there is a possibility something to do with faulty blinker cancelling mechanism inside the steering column stalk that makes clicky noise?

If the sound is around the left wheel arch area, then apparently the sound is normal (if it is the same sound I'm getting), I don't remember 100% what the dealer said but it only happens when you are moving slowly <10 or at a standstill...

                            I get the same sound.

Only on the left side and only at slow speeds - mainly in almost full lock in reverse.

ive just put it down that I scored a lemon givin my entire engine was replaced at 30,000 k's.
