    Doesnt a Golf Mk6 look more like a Golf Mk4.5?

    I think they have gone backwards a generation rather than forwards..

    they should have gone M4 then Mk6 and then back to Mk5 who in my opinion looks more modern than Mk6..

    Have a look at the lights, small little oval things.. whilst peugeot has headlights that are a metre long stretching up the side of the car..

    if anything, i think the golf mk6 has gone more japaneasy, it's lost it's european look.

      Car makers who look for repeat business seem to alternate between rounded and straight, tear drop and wedge shapes, but all within a basic 'look' (for example, BMW, Mercedes).

      IMO:

      - the MK1 was very straight lined and angular,
      - the MK2 basically the same but slightly more rounded at the back,
      - the MK3 quite rounded and with those full-length 'scallops' below the window line,
      - the MK4 returned to the MK1 simplicity (no scallops, flatter panels) but with a rounded front;
      - the MK5 added some of the MK3 roundness below the window line, a slightly wedgy look and more use of angles (for example the more rounded hatch glass and the headlights);
      - now the MK6 has gone back to the MK4 by straightening some of the curves (eg, extending the life line to the headlights, just like the MK3 but with shallower scallops) and flattened some of the angles (eg the grill/headlights).

      The headlights have certainly evolved (single lights in MK1, twin lights in MK2, larger in MK3 and MK4, angling up in MKV and now stretched back even more in MK6).

      Evolutionary, freshened up, but still unmistakably Golf (extra thought - in some ways more like a MK3 than a MK4).

        yer a agree with the above post, you've summed it up quite well. but still was traveling down M4 on Sunday and saw a new Grey Mk6, i think it's going to just need some time to settle into the eye's of consumers. has gone more rounded in some area's but still looks very European. i almost think they have given it a slight Peugeot look.
        but hey it's here to stay, lets just wait to see what awesome after market mod's come out for this shape.

                I never liked the Mk5 to start with, but they have really grown on me.

                I recently went for a walk through a stealership when getting my new key programed and had a look at the mk6 and some mk5s and I like them both, it's just that the Mk6 is a little newer and will no doubt take some time to appreciate.

                  I was at my local dealership yesterday (also having a new key programmed) and had a good look over the MK VI and can honestly say that I dunno.

                  It does have a nice clean fresh look about it and is still recogniseable as a Golf, but IMHO I feel that some of the changes have not done it justice and in some ways have gone backwards. From the front it looks sharp and sporty with a quality European look about it but that rear end YUK they really need to change things there, and what's with the door handles ? They look like they were designed to suit a Mack truck not a small European sedan ( too chunky IMO). There was a MK V and a MK VI parked side by side in the yard and when comparing them, the back of the MK V is IMO a lot nicer and looks more expensive than the MK VI.

                  I was talking to one of the sales people and asked how sales were going on the MK VI and he said he felt it was going to take time to grow on people and he hoped that once the new ads hit our TV screens that sales would improve. He said himself (in his own opinion) that he still wasn't sure if the changes made were for the better and that the new MK VI range was not as broad as earlier models (at this stage) and thus buyers won't have as much choice.

                  Hopefully the world economic situation will improve as well and allow manufacturers to give consumers the choices they want (not just with cars) because without choices it will pretty boring

                  In answer to the thread topic, IMO it still look similar to a MK V Comfortline / Pacific from the front only more square cut, but from the rear I don't know, it looks more like a Holden Astra to me and the tail lights are much narrower than the MK IV or MK V Golf. Just my impressions anyway.

                    Reading the latest Volkswagen Magazine by VW I think Walter De Silva's aim was to emulate the Mark 4 into the Mark 5 chassis.

                    As Walter wasn't working with a clean sheet I don't think his visions for the Golf are clearly seen as of yet; the Mark 7 will be his first clean sheet Golf design.

                      The mk6 pic on the cover of the latest Volkswagen dealer magazine is the first time I've genuinely liked it without trying to convince myself.

                      Although a base model, it wasn't in standard trim from what I could tell - lower and with larger wheels - the proportions just worked.
                      Needs some more time, but it's definitely growing on me.

                      I liked the Mk5 from the start.
                      Mk5 along with the mk1 and mk2 just click for me.

                        The Mk5 was the only golf I fell in love with the first time I saw it.
                        The Mk6 is starting to grow on me, as long as its slightly lowered to give it that even wider stance.
