Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Headlight Armour

If you are a keen DIY guy you may have quickly learnt that it doesn't always go well.

I did with trying to spary tint my rear tailights. As a result they looked crap. I had a detailer buff them out as best he could but they look kinda weird.

My brother told me about these. Sure they are a bt pricey but if you sell it or want to go back to stock then these look hot!

Smoke your taillights with our adhesive backed smoked lighting protection film. Made to order in the USA for your 2006, 2007, 2008 or 2009 VW Rabbit, GTI and R32 V. Given the shape of the lens they do take more time to install than most.

Mate until you break something, how do you know what's possible?

Hate to tell you, but I have a similar high quality set of headlight / tail-light tints, and have to say with the curve of the Golf headlight at least, it would take a professional to do a decent job. I gave up after a good hour of hairdryer, soapy water, and multiple swearing laced attempts.

The film is top stuff, but applying it to a curve from a flat sheet, yeah well....

There is self-adhesive vinyl material available that is used for car wraps - it's deformable in 3 axes (you know, x y & z - axes doesn't look right for the plural of axis, does it?). It's pretty amazing stuff, but unless you're applying it in 25 - 30 degree temps, it's a real bitch to work with.

But you can push and pull it to amazing shapes and still return it to 'flat' by applying some heat. Once it's in place, you hit it with about 85 degree heat and that 'resets' its memory and forever more stays in its new shape.

Having said all that, I've never heard of a transparent variety of wrapping vinyl. But then again, anything's possible I guess. I'm actually surprised it's being sold as a DIY product - unless you've been taught how to apply it, I'd never recommend a novice to give it a shot...
