    I understand one of the reasons why the UN is involved in standardising speedo error and other car specs (talk about 'big brother' ) is to remove trade barriers (i.e. countries can't set up arbitrary 'speedo specifications' to add costs to imports).

    Older readers might recall Australian design rules in the 60's and 70's specified seat belt width in inches (two inches, I believe) which meant european (metric) car makers had to change their 50mm belts which were too narrow (two inches = for 50.8m) and therefore had to spend additional cost on new belts (which in the case of certain Mercedes cars were not as effective as the originals...).
