Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

There are several that will fit anything to get a sale.
They import 2nd hand mud&snows from Europe that no longer satisfy the age requirements for European rego; they do grey/parallel imports of new tyres without manufacturers warranty; they get the tyres taken off grey import cars (because they don't pass compliance) and sell them as 2nd-hand; they import cheap alloys that don't comply with the ADRs.

Given the speed that his OEM 17" rims disapeared, I'd venture that the OP dealt with one of the shonkies.

edit: I don't think the wheels & tyres will cause physical danger, I just don't think they are compliant with insurance & rego.

True I haven't. You poor sods. I don't think we've got anyone like that up here in QLD. But we are basically a bunch of straw-chewing yokels compared to you lot

Guys, I'm not sure if the GTI is the same but the GT has a sticker on the fuel flap which covers:
      195/65/15
      205/55/16
      225/45/17

Obviously those wheel and tyre combos are designed for the vehicle (I guess Edition, Pacific, GT/GTI combos) so should be considered safe and legal. If there is any doubt then cut to the chase and check with your insurance company.

        Probably legal

        Hi guys,

Thanks for all the suggestions, but as far as I can tell by checking the specs, the VW dealer, and VicRoads: the 16" wheels are legal. As nice as it would be to have a legal way to get my $$ back, I don't think I have one.

In this case, I am inclined to say this is my stuff up - and I'll just have to admit I made a mistake, find a way to fix it, and move on. As CogDoc said: I'll take this as an excuse/opportunity to buy something nicer - and consider it a lesson learned.

          GTI lists

          205/55/16 91W
          225/45/17 91W
          225/40/18 92Y

I don't see how the 15" would fit over the calipers on the GT? The 16" in the photo looks like it's got very little clearance so 15" would be cutting it pretty fine.

The R32 I think only has the 18" wheel listed.

            Hankook Ventus RS-2's

What most of the high hp subaru's are using in perth. Including all the 10 second ones.

Super high silica content tyre, with grip level that is half way towards semi slick race tyre. More sticky than pirelli p zero rosso even when those are shaved.

Often used in auto-cross and by high hp street cars that want SUPER high grip in the dry.

            They are like limpet mines.

Treadwear rating is like 200 .. semi slicks are like 50-80 (eg even stickier). Rosso's are 220! (less sticky).

*Disclaimer - Don't rely on me, seek your own professional advice. Audi R8 E-tron. 230kw 4500nm! (not a typo).

              Unbelievable,

Sounds like you got dudded. Also sounds like you're wearing it well.

I personally think that the std GTi wheels aren't that attractive anyway, so what better reason to upgrade to some aftermarkets!

              I have some 17" Abt A23s if you're interested!

                Mav,

R32 has a 17" listed on the fuel cap, not sure exactly what specs, I can go check it later.
