Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GTI vs Cooper S and the winner is.....

    Hi,
About a month ago I purchased a second hand stock 2006 GTI with DSG. Having fun punting this car around the place, although the wife thinks the ride's a bit harsh - I don't really notice.

Anyway a mate has a late model turbo mini cooper s, so we went for a blat through mt nebo/glorious here in Brissie which has excellent twisty roads. The mini also has a john cooper works stage 1 kit, making it a bit quicker than stock.

I thought the mini would be quicker with it's weight advantage over the GTI, but this was not the case. The DSG gearbox is superb and saves time keeping the turbo on the money. In a straight line there is not much in it both cars neck and neck. Both cars are very good at cornering, although the GTI would oversteer more than the mini (due to it's greater weight). I felt the GTI could make an average driver look quick, where as the mini needed to be man handled to get the best out of it. Being on a public road, I wasn't really trying to find the limits of these cars, but we couldn't help ourselves.

We swapped cars and I felt the mini was better through the corners with heaps more driver feedback through the steering thanks to it's sports mode that reduces the amount of power assisted steering (and other small changes). The mini could turn in easier, but the GTI had better drive out of the corners. I also felt the brakes were better on the GTI, there was a serious downhill section which the mini was starting to feel a bit of fade - the GTI remained strong.

At the end of the day my mate agreed that the GTI was a better all round package to live with, comfortable seats, auto for the days stuck in city traffic, and paddle shift for fun in the sun. The mini has to be constantly driven and man handled with it's six speed manual, and is a small car without much space. But as a drivers car I liked the mini - just couldn't live with it as my only car.

    B.
ps Saving up for the APR ecu upgrade and then I'll be back to the hills to dust off my mates mini.

    Interesting write up, whplash.

When I tested the Mini, I got a similar impression: that it FELT very quick.

I had my suspicions that it may have been just its feel - looks like that was justified.

They are a great car to hurry along - just horrible to live with (hot hatch mistress, perhaps?)

There's not really one area that the Golf wins in, is there? But it's the sum of all its parts that makes it a great buy.

I agree the GTI is a better all-rounder, but if a more driver focused buy is wanted then the MINI will always come out in front. They're just more fun to drive. Day to day, though, GTI is a clear winner, so it all depends on what you want.

Perhaps the Renaultsport Clio would be the only other "hot-hatch" option to consider if you're not too concerned with ride quality and practicality.

Fifth gear did a comparison on the track between the Scirocco and the Cooper S and the Scirocco. The Scirocco's performance is around the same as the GTI.

The GTI and the Mini are similar in performance and price, but quite different in size... the Mini is more like the Polo (for example, the GTI seats three adults in the back seat, while the Mini seats two, really).

I wonder whether VW will tweak the Polo GTI, and give BMW something to think about...

Too true - the mini has only two rear seats, no boot, 2 doors only, and no spare (shock, horror ).

Actually the spiel I got from the Mini dealer re the spare was hilarious. "No, you can't buy them from any old tyre dealer - best to contact us - no, don't know the exact price, but we've got lots in stock - between $350 & $450 each - no, can't tell you what sort of mileage you'll get. If you get stuck in Darwin with a flat, we'll ship the wheel to you - but you can drive a really long way with the goop in the flat tyre..."

            Hardly inspiring stuff...

Good write up IMO due to a subjective drive, back to back in both vehicles! Went for a blat myself up those same mountains today in my recently Custom Code flashed Polo GTI, best $1100 I have spent modding a car

By the time you go head to head with the Mini once again I highly recommend a flash of some description, rear sway bar and anti lift kit to show the little bugger whos BOSS!

              Keep us updated,

              Anthony.

We actually had a discussion about how a mini would compare again the Polo - being closer to the same size. I haven't had a chance to drive a Polo GTI so can't comment on that.

It's sometimes hard to compare, as each drivers style is different. When pushing a little harder it comes down to how late (or how big your balls are) you brake into corners, corning speed etc. These cars are very capable, and apart from being on a track, you can't always exploit their true potential.
