If u use the paddles when the car is in D or S and dont want to wait for the 15 seconds or whatever to put it back to auso mode you use hold that down.
Personally i just move the gear lever over to M and back to D

mmmm cheers, I thought it might have been something like that but it just changed gear when I tried it.
I think it's the temperature sensor for the display?? Ambient??
Hmm... climate control sensor maybe? Mine didn't seem to be plugged into anything though. Although two tabs were broken off the diffuser panel and I swear it wasn't me - I pulled the thing out because it wasn't sitting well in it's surround. My car has BT and I'm wondering if it was the bloody dealer... 2nd hand car though so I have no recourse.
OK, like a tool I should've consulted The Good Book.
The service manual describes it as a "Sun Light Sensor" (...mounted in the indirect ventilation system).
Under the cover should be a wiring harness that connects to the "Photo Sensor" (it detects photographs???).
So there you go, kids - we all learned a few things today
So I guess this is what turns your headlights on & off.
I was told that it was all handled by the two sensors in the rear view mirror.
And benno, you reckon it's the wiper sensor?
What about this: they may well be three separate systems after all - the mirror handling the dimming, the windscreen sensor handling the wipers, and the lumpy do-dad handling the lights?
PS benno - isn't the GPS antenna built into the sharkfin?
This 'Photo light sensor' is for the Climate Control. From what I understand the system measures direct sunlight to compensate for the sun heating up the occupants and not just measuring ambient cabin temperature.
When I had my bluetooth installed the guy didn't turn the car off completely. Afterwards I checked for error codes with VAGCOM and that sensor threw a code. It was in the AVAC (climate control) controller.
Look at this comprehensive answer, BEFORE Maverick slapped everyone in the face with a technical bulletin and a RTFM!

Hmmm that's interesting. It doesn't really look like it has any photo-diode kind of component. It's just black plastic on the top of it. Maybe it's just a normal temp sensor?
Mine is not currently plugged into anything. I should try and find the plug!

Beaten but I'll post some information on the sensor anyway (I've been considering getting rid of the vent and putting a tray in but want to minimise the size of the sensor if I do this).
The sensor is a Hella sun sensor, it uses optical ASICs that integrate the opto-sensitive element and the electronic circuit. The plastic cover on the unit can be removed and replaced with a different design or cut down within reason as long as the sensor can still see the sun (which makes it a bit harder to put the sensor in the base of the tray as it could be covered).
Sun sensor
Measurable irradiance 0 W/m2 to 800 W/m2
Spectral range approx. 400 nm to 1000 nm
Absolute tolerance of the electrical output ±3%
Ambient light sensor
Measurable illuminance 0 Lux to 5,000 Lux
Spectral range approx. 400 nm to 700 nm
Absolute tolerance of the electrical output ±3%
Interesting that it measures sunlight without any kind of transparent surface.
I just pulled it out - mine is not connected. The wire bundle is looped and hooked under another part that I can't remove without a torx screwdriver and mine have gone missing in the drama of moving houses... Also, the two rear tabs on the actual grille were broken off before I removed it and the torx screw that holds the vent component down is missing.
The only time this could have happened really is when the tech who install the BT at the dealer disassembled the dash.
Not friggin happy jan. I'm the 2nd owner of the car so I might not have much recourse to get it fixed under warranty... How can someone care so little about their work that they do something like this?
The car's first service is still 4500 km away, I guess I'll talk to the dealer that installed it then and see how I go.
I wonder how much of a difference it actually makes? I haven't been overly impressed with the climate control so far.
