Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • colour coding...

hey first of all i thought i would say hello! this is my first post here so here goes:

getting an 05 TDI in a few weeks off my dad (he is geting a Volvo V70...), but unfortunately it is an earlier model before VW decided it would be good to not have black plastic all over the car.

So my question is this....where can i find gunmetal/dark grey paint that is as close to the mk5 gunmetal without getting custom paint made? I am a VW noob so i have no idea what the paint's actual name is. I dont want to spend a fortune, so brands like White Knight, Australian Export (maybe not), etc are preferrable. Anything in a rattle can, readily available.

My next question is where can i find door handles of the same colour? Are wreckers the best bet? and how much do you think i am looking at? I have limited funds because i cannot work this year (full-time [as in 7am-5pm daily] aviation student). Thanks in advance!

If you want this done get it done properly at a paint shop or you will kick yourself everytime you look at it and it isn't just right. A few hundred bucks is way worth the saved anguish IMO, bargain with the paint shop.

Dude, spray cans are for graffitti and for spraying cheapo cars in racing colours for bush bashing. Just don't do it. It will look way worse.

Dude, that's an awful idea. Get it done properly, or don't do it at all.

I agree, it's just not worth it.

It's really not that expensive, all you have to do is shop around.

I got my rear bumper, skirts, front lip and bonnet all painted for $650 because the guy at the shop always looks after me or anyone I refer to him. So if you're in Brisbane, there's always options.

I went to Fogarty bodyworks at Geebung. On Robinson Rd., just near Geebung train station.

If you do decide to go over there, just tell him you're a mate of mine and tell them he painted my white GTi with the black through the middle.

                Couple of pics:

Alright, well despite all your suggestions i'm going to give it a whirl and see how it turns out. If it looks crappy then i can just take the paint off again...no big deal. I'm a 19 year old student with absolutely NO money (i get $120 from centrelink a week which covers fuel and my phone bill). I'll take photos if it turns out alright...

Just make sure you are confident when you start doing it.

                    Good luck

Seeing as I'm paying for it then.

I'd rather you spent your $10 that you were going to spend on export paint, or something else, maybe some stuff to keep it nice and black.

                      Thanks.

But yeah, good luck with that.

I have given up on the thought of colour coding side skirts after checking out the damage on mine from road debris. May still do it to make it look a bit more appealing when i go to sell it though.

                          Needs mudflaps.

Custom mixed paint is only $24 a large high pressure can at the auto paint store near me.

Just get the right **** and the result will be great.

Be warned though, I got told by auto spray guys that if the car has ever been waxed or polished the silicon residue and waxes go deep into the plastic.

The paint will probably peeel or crack in places after a year.

This was when I was offering them $200 to just colour code the ****er and they said "sorry , its an easy cash job but the result just wouldn't hold up"

If you do go ahead, preparation of the bumper is ALL important. You'll want a bottle of Prepsol, or "wax and grease" remover, and do over the entire area a few times with a clean rag. It won't hurt the paint like thinners will, so don't fret. You can buy actual plastic paint at supercheap, the colours will be generic, and the silver is unlikely to match, but it is cheap, works, and will stay flexible.

As already mentioned it WILL peel off sooner than you'd like, and it will then look very odd without a touchup, but if you want to go for it, then do so. When I was a student I did a heap of painting mods at next to no cash, some worked, some didn't. I sure learnt a lot, and so shall you!
