  • Growling noise after starting Gti Mk5 MYO9

Not sure if anyone has experienced this....Bought a New MK5 GTi in Nov 08 in Liverpool...Noticed after a month or so that when you start the engine there is a growling hollow noise that is heard ....lasts for about +/-3seconds.
Its very annoying to say the least....Went back to the dealer...explained...but it was like i was telling a parable, mystery or something.....It looked like I was just creating a problem for myself.....I then insisted on having one of the service guys to listen to it....We heard it twice and but after a few more starts there was nothing....The service guy suspected that it might be related to the front speakers.....How?? I cant tell.......If it is,... does it mean all MK5 Gti pilots always switch of their car radios before they start their engines so as to avoid that unpleasant noise......
    How can it be fixed...

Does it sound engine / engine bay sourced, or something inside the car? Do you notice the sound outside?

if it's the first couple of seconds, and goes away after a few starts AND is coming from the engine bay, I'd suspect fuel pump/oil pump, or even dodgy oil circulation.

Some engines can sound nasty for the first few seconds until the oil finds its way around the place. Can't say I've ever noticed it in a VW though...

I hear something like this and suspect it's coming from the audio system (certainly sounds like it) upon startup, it's a little annoying but i haven't got round to getting it looked at,

      Used to it now.

        strange sounds

While we are on strange sounds... what is that 'unravelling' noise you hear when you open a car door first thing in the morning? It seems to come from the back of the car, and sounds abit like a power cord being rewound into a vacuum cleaner... or a power aerial winding down into a fender (except, of course, it does not have such an aerial).

Not a biggie, but... any thoughts?

It's the low pressure fuel pump priming the system ready for you to start the car. One of the many things the golf does in preparation like starting up the RNS510 to shorten the startup time when you start the car.

Could be the starter motor over running after it has disengaged the flywheel ring gear.

When the starter engages, power to the radio seems to be cut, and the noise happens when you release the key and the power is restored.

It doesn't always happen, don't know why, have got used to it.

Amazing. Do wonders about this car ever cease?

                      Growling Noise

It sounds like its coming from the engine(or under the engine bay if i am to point)....becomes more pronounced after the first "Vroom'"...then...GROWL!!....then back to normal idling.....

Try with radio off to eliminate that.

Next I would inspect the idler pulleys.

It comes from the front speakers, fitted an aftermarket stereo and the noise has disappeared from my GTI.. Only ever used to do it on a cold start tho...

Sifting through some of the mk5 thread's, I see a few problem's popping up that I've seen before & have fixed successfully & one of those I see is the mk5 radio's growling/crackling on start up.

Now I could say I was the first to successfully rectify this problem with an idea to retrofit part's from a completely different model, but seeing as I'm one of those crappy dealership mechanic's you all hate & don't believe (even though I worked at the fore front of motor car technology for 10+ years before starting with VW, which is still in front of VW technology by a absolute long shot & I'm a problem solver tech & not a oil, lube & brake boy), I think I'd rather keep the info to myself, than here I'm wrong from the people who have probably never even changed a tyre let alone a radio.

                              Happy mk fiving!
