Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Jetta TDI DSG advice

Firstly, I'm seriously looking at a MY08 (brand new) 2.0 TDI with DSG.

Now I my main concern for this car is the DSG.. I've read many many threads on this forum with some people saying it's great and some people saying it's horrible - but i've noted that most of these are petrol drivers and I would like to know if it behaves in the same way for the Oil Burner.

I'm coming from a Manual and another one of my concerns is the take off speed. I've noted that many people are complaining that even on a flat surface (not to mention an incline) the TDI coupled with the DSG can be really slow and full of lag. I have a rough idea of how the DSG works (auto engaging the clutch etc) but if it is laggy, it could be dangerous and cause an accident..

So please help me, I need to know whether i'm making the right decision with this and whether getting this car will prove the be more problematic than my old one.. (Would love to hear from TDI DSG owners and their experiences!)

    Thanks in advance

Ps. What's the average distance you're getting from one tank of Diesel?

Test drive will answer your questions.
    Have no issues with mine.
95% freeway close to 1200km out of a tank each time.

No issues with mine either and it is driven mostly in traffic and areas where the gear box is made to work. Sometimes use it manually for "practice" but it does a great job. Averaging about 6l/100 which is about 850km without getting too low in the tank.

Never had any issues with mine either. The throttle responsive is a touch different which needed about a day or two to get used to (granted it's v6). Never had anything close to lag really when cruising around. As per the advice above go and have a test drive of one, I guarantee all your concerns will disappear.

I don't have a problem. It can be slow to take off, so if I'm in Tiptronic mode, I change up to second early, then give it the boot and it flies.

I don't think that there's a perfect system, manual, auto or dsg, but having said that, the DSG is pretty good.

          I think the real question is;
Would I buy another? Yes, most definately!

Ok thanks guys, hopefully I can get around to test driving one some time this week.. Wow 850 to 1200km out of a tank is fantastic when I'm only getting max 500.. And I do half highway and half city driving.

Remember on all golf's there are 2 throttle maps, cruise and sport. If the car senses your driving real slow then it will sit in cruise throttle map and any throttle inputs you give eg 40% will probably actually only get u 30% throttle.

So snap the car out of this by driving in manual mode and booting it in at least 1 gear. Then you can go back to D and be in sport throttle map where 40% = 40%.

Sport mode also works. So whack it in sport drive for a bit then go back to D and it will be sharper.

You can also just drive the first 2 mins of driving in sport that way your oil will heat up faster as its holding more revs in lower gears.

lag is only between 1st and 2nd gear...and its really only noticable if you have compared it to a GTI or TFSI

For some its no drama for others it is annoying (i found it annoying).

I think had they put the 125kw version into a jetta it may have solved part of this issue.

That said i have no troubles recommending the DSG TDI Jetta if you want a diesel. Fantastic car, fantastic gearbox.

Hey yeah sorry, haven't had time to sit down these past 2 days.

I did get my Jetta on tuesday and i'm so happy with it! It's a Black Magic Demo but you would never tell.. It looks brand new. The pulling power is amazing and the DSG changes in the blink of an eye! There's so much space inside too! Haha I could just keep going on and on and on...

I've come out of a manual 2001 V5 Bora fully optioned. I will miss the sunroof but i'll get over it
