the technology is a good idea. I have had a low impact fender bender once and this tech would have stopped it.
I was at a red light waiting to go forward. The light turned green and the car in front started to move. I took my foot off the brake and then got distracted by someone honking their horn in the adjacent lane. By the time I turned my head forward again, I had hit the guy in front who for some reason had stopped going forward despite the light being green.

I test drove a turbo C30 thinking it might be an alternative to the golf with DSG.
BOY was I wrong. It would be hard to tune a turbo engine of that size to produce less power and torque and it would also be hard to install it in a car heavier for its hatch size. The thing wallowed around corners so bad that a normal speed corner (normal for me) caused bump stops with the tyres rubbing... RRR RRR RRR RR. Pathetic.
It had some interesting interior bits but compared to the way any golf drives I honestly would prefer a 1.6 base model golf.

Isn't this piece of tech. (or similar) being included as an option on selected models in the Golf Mk VI ?
Do you mean the Active Cruise Control? I know it is available on the Passat, don't know which other current models. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zGvUoCjbTU (BMW but basically the same minus the heads up display)
It keeps a safe distance from the car in front, I think it would be very useful.
Especially with the Golf's cruise control system, I prefer the separate stalk like in the Passat.
Active cruise control won't stop the car, you need to do it yourself (I was reading the manual) it will only reduce your speed to a specific level.
There are also warnings that it may detect steep gradients or walls/barriers on corners as being 'obstacles'.
The reason for the 30km/hr limit is that the faster you go, the more space the car needs to come to a full stop. The more space it needs, the further in front of the car the lasers/radar needs to be scanning, and the less reliable and more expensive/complex it gets.

I thought it was 'cause Volvos have trouble making it past 30 km/hr?
