Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      My car has NEVER had a dealer service, and never will. I don't trust them, and have had nothing but trouble at the 4 dealers I have been to(and this is after EACH of them figured out what the car was). Question my passion...I do the work myself, and, before you ask, it has been scanned with a Dealer scan tool too. Just because there is no VW sign out the front dosn't mean a workshop can't buy one...And I have never seen a car's trade in value suffer just because it wasn't serviced at a dealer.
      Workshops are workshops, you get the good and the bad in each, dealer or not...You get the guys that are passionate about cars(like GolfWorx), and you get the guys that are just working for the cash.

        Hi All,

        just information I have just had a 60k service done at the same dealer that supplied my novated lease vehicle. Was $630 inc GST. A quick break down of costs were:-

        $313 labour
        $74.25 Mobil oil
        $15.75 workshop supplies and enviro waste charge
        $126.41 air, fuel, oil elements and sump plug (washer in guess)
        $23.63 1 lt brake fluid
        $19 wheel rotate and balance (I asked for this to be done - 15k done on set so far)
        $57.25 GST

        They also indicated "may require rear brakes next service". My baby came back washed and vaccuumed too.

        All in all Im happy because of the piece of mind.

        Was it overpriced - maybe
        Was it convenient - yes
        Could I have done some of it myself - yes but time, lack of specific knowledge of diesels and some technology mean I err on the safe side not to mention the lease company ensure the vehicles under lease are maintained to manufacturer specifications
        What confidence do I have - the dealer is the preferred VW supplier in VIC for nlc leasing company.

        So far my services have cost (figures quoted below exclude gst):-
        service interval $
        km/total maintenance & tyres 2,216.40
        15,000 250.00
        30,000 339.86
        45,000 230.82
        60,000 572.55
        tyres x 4 823.17

        The maintenance and tyre costs to date equate to approx $0.04 per km.
        Not much really in my scheme of thing!

              Can someone please advice how many km you need to travel before toothed belt is scheduled for a change.... Is 60k or 75 or 90.... Diesel Golf.

                It is in your owner's manual, at 150,000km for 06-07 Golf V TDI

                  My experience with this goes back to late '64 when I traded a '58 beetle in that had a perfect dealer stamped service book. It made absolutely no difference to the trade in on a new one. This was a bitter lesson for me as it cost money to keep it going [I was capable of doing it myself] & often I had to adjust the timing again after I took the car home.
                  Since that time I have owned over 10 VWs & I document every service & repair that I do. This has worked very well for me, in fact there is far more info than the dealer stamped book provides.
                  Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

                    I have a general question about services.

                    Since I don't drive much, the service date always rolls around before the k's have been racked up. Is there any point/requirement to get it serviced at the due date instead of the k's?

                      I think that the book will tell you to have it serviced every 15,000 OR 12 mths, which ever comes first.

                      That's what I was told by Solitaire VW Service. Our TDI will only travel about 10-12,000 in the first year.

                        Yes

                        The fluids can get old and need changing (unless VW Service tell you otherwise).

                          Yes because oils, belts, hoses, fluids and so deteriorate with age as well as use and part of the service is an inspection to check these.

                          And it's only once a year, a lot of cars have to go in every 6 months. The dealer based on km's may recommend that they do the occasional minor service and delay a major one for 12 months.

                            I also own a T4 Trakka which sometimes sits for a couple of months without being used. I spoke to Castrol technical about the need to change the oil at the time interval. They confirmed that the oil doesn't deteriorate if the van is not being used. The manufacturers assume that if you only travel small distances each year you maybe driving with the same frequency but very short trips eg down to the shops or bus stop. This comes under severe service & must be changed under the time recommendation or even earlier.
                            In my case when my van is started it travels a long distance[holiday]
                            My Mk5 is used for everyday needs & as such I need to change by the recommended time.
                            I think BMW had a system that told you when to service based on your useage history.
                            The clutch & brake fluid must be changed at 2 years & is purely time based.
                            Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

                              Oil does deteriorate if the engine is not in use. Simply just being exposed to air, moisture and being in contact with different metals and other materials. Oil will oxidize and also has use by date.
