  • Smell coming from the air conditioning after switiching it off?

    Hi All,

Great forum, I am a newbie but have owed a GTi for the past ten months. I noticed recently that there is a smell of wet dog almost coming from the air conditioning after it has been running for a while and I decide to turn it off. Didn't notice it brand new and in fact was surprised there wasn't any compared to my old Astra where the smell was really ripe.

My question is, do other people have this issue? and can it be removed? is it worth taking into VW to get sorted?

    cheers

It's probably got a growth in it. Kind of like mould. Quite common.

Wurth make a spray that can fix it. You spray it in the ducts i think and switch the car on (engine running) with the air con on, on recirculate and it kills the crap on the evaporator.

I had this recently as well, its the pollen filter.

Take it back to VW and they will changeit for about $27.

Its due to be changed at 30,000 k's.

I detected a faint hint of burnt smell from around the battery box area in the engine bay the other day ... I thought it could be the DSG clutch slipping or something, being on the stinking hot days of recent. I'll get the pollen filter checked!

Where did you get a quote for $27?? I think I'll go get mine replaced.

I had my car in for service at Barloworld Springvale today and they wanted $57 for the pollen filter, and wanted nearly $90 for wiper blades ( all 3 wipers ).

I didn't go ahead with their recommendations, I had a gut feeling they were overcharging me heaps.

i got a pollen filter, fuel filter and air filter + brake light switch, and a bottle of touch up paint, for my car recently, and the total was about $135 for the lot.

              the pollen filter was $21.

                Hey warhead,

Do a search on the forum. There's a thread about changing the wiper inserts yourself. They are about $18 each from most dealer parts counters(for the rubber blade only) and change them yourself. I got mine at Burwins 'coz it was closer then getting to Mulgrave.

                Cheers,

                Neil

Thanks for the tip, I actually did do a search out of curiosity, and I'm glad I didn't fall for the dealer trap.

I'm starting to think they're just trying to force a wiper blade change on me, they seem to be doing ok still, and to recommend I change the entire assembly when a new piece of rubber will do. This just made me trust dealers even less.
