Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I hate gutters...

Just like James G, I hate gutters and roundabouts.

Came into a round about tonight and my car just slid into a gutter. The ABS came on but no ESP. Very weird.

Anyway my front left wheel is boned and I think I have broken the strut because the wheel moves around in the arch. Also the wishbone is wish-boned.

Gonna have to be insurance me thinks.

Oh well lucky I still have the MK2 GTI to get around in.

Was thinking of getting it sent to Stow Smash in Atarmon. Any thoughts on where is good. Allianz are going to recommend but I am keen to know experiences.

Oh mate, that brings tears to the eyes...

And yes, you've got some nasty castor happening there.

Insurance, eh? So what happened? Swerve to miss a koala?
    That happens all the time...

        Oh man, what a bummer!

Still I reckon everyone with a FWD car has done that at some point or rather. Luckily I had my "learning experience" way back in a pizza delivery car, and it ended up much the same.

        Ouch!!

Yeah I learnt all that years ago. The GT has pulled itself into line loads of times in cases like this.

          ARSE!

I just had mine fixed by Currans at Auburn who specialise in prestige cars and are also an authorised Lexus repairer. When mine was towed in there, it was surrounded by Porsches, Bentleys etc. it was in very good company!

Mine was a major repair, close to $20,000 and I can't fault the repair job from the perspective of workmanship, the car looks like brand new. There are a couple of issues such as the hoodlining having dirty handprints and the plastic surround on the Isofix fittings being replaced upside down but these will be rectified next week. The owner of the business shook his head in disbelief at the hoodlining issue, he was disappointed that the car had been returned like that. To me, the most important thing after a major bingle involving rear suspension damage is that the car looks and drives like new and that they have the right attitude to any rectification work that needsa to be done. They have also offered a free polish and clay bar treatment after 6 weeks which I will take them up on.

The job did take a long time but this was due to a number of factors beyond their control, insurance stuffed us around as they considered writing the car off then changed their mind, Christmas didn't help, neither did a left hand side panel being supplied instead of a right hand side, then there was a delay in supply of a new wheel etc. etc.

If I had need for a panelbeater again, I would go back there and I would recommend them.

Contact number is 9649 4499, ask for Peter or Sam (owner).

            Cheers

            George

FARK mate, that's bad, hope it comes back alright.

I've done exactly the same thing on my 1990 integra, spent a couple thous on it, but still wasn't the same ( I think I bent more than I can see), so I off loaded to some one else. and So another FWD in the gutter.

But what if it was a RWD, wouldn't the damage and cost be as significant with an oversteer, and a back wheel in the gutter.
