Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Haven't you only had your car a week?

Shouldn't you perhaps wait until the car has been run in properly? Launch control is pretty punishing on the car and I waited until about 3500km before I tried it.

It's not the speed you go to that is punishing it's the launch itself!

I use it often (about once a week) in trying to prefect the launch.
So far no problems in 7 months and 13,000 kms. Only time will tell

Really? DOH... My car's only got 179 kms on it (got it yesterday), and I've 'tried' it err, about 5 times already.

Maybe I should back it off a little... I still can't keep the front wheels from spinning.

Well it's never gonna be stronger than when it's new, ey.

I'm more worried about hurting the engine than the drive train. I'll have to take it a bit easier until I clock up some more ks.

True it's only going to go downhill from there

                  Could be a good idea

I found it hard to take it easy for the first 1000kms but I got there, that was also when I was going to do my first launch but it took another 2500kms before I found a good place to do it.

                    What has your research uncovered?
Which RPM works best for you?
are you measuring #s or just going on feeling as to what hooks up best?

I've seen GTIs smoking the fronts at higher RPM, but much more efficient up near 2-2.5k.

                      Not once in 7000ks.

Prob never will. Just cant bring myself to do what in my mind feels like it "may" abuse some component.

The launch control is actually very versatile. It appears you can take it to any RPM (under 3000), and if you hold it there for a bit - that's where the RPMs lock.

I did a 1500 rpm launch, and only took it to 4000rpm before I paddleshifted. It was a very 'sedate' launch on the engine, but it still took off like stink.

So it appears the 2500-3000 rpm 'lock' is a max lock, you can set it wherever you like - by simply holding the revs steady for a second or two, where you want it to launch from....

                        Give it a go...

I personally don't hold much creedance in the babying the engine philosophy. What I do believe, is you should never labour an engine (low RPMs under load are bad), and you should never - ever - beat up on an engine when it's cold.

But then again what do I know.. I'm an IT dude, not a german mechanic...

I have measured times a handfull of times.

So Far I found I got around 7.2 secs with the standard Prescribed LC (2500 rpm, off the brake, and hard on once you got traction)

I tried a full throttle launch the other day, foot all way down, 3000rpm, once clutch engages, come of gas abit, then back hard on. Felt like a good launch, but didn't time. Tried again and turned rubber into smoke, can't be good for the trans too.

The best recorded launch I had gave me 6.77 sec (see Slip) with the following procedure:

                          1. Engage LC (Stop, S Drive, TC off)
                          2. Full Throttle
                          3. TC Back ON (This will hold the LC Mode, limiting to 3000 rpm)
                          4. When you are ready, brake off

I've never seen this procedure mentioned anywhere else, and just got to it with trial and error.

I found it gives you a much better launch as you loose traction it will back off the power just enough to grip, and then will let power loose.
It's not as exciting as with the TC off, but then you don't have to worry about different surface conditions, and exact revs, and I would hope it's safer on the transmission.

that's a cool variance for the procedure... i always wondered why you had to leave TC off, and yet never thought of simply turning it back on! DOH!

My best run was simply flooring it all the way with LC launch; car is chipped though. Be interesting to see what it'd do with stock map.

Perhaps a dumb question from a newbie...

How are you guys generating/capturing those "run" results? Looks like some Apple/iPod app, but I'm not familiar with it.
How does it work? ie, how does it interface with the car to gather the info?

                              Cheers,
