Nah, I'll have a drink for a couple of the negative nellies who know best on here instead

Fear not ..my car is out of factory warranty in 4 months time anyway.

My experience with dealers is that unless you buy the car from them, they don't want to know you or any problems you have. They have the opinion that they shouldn't have to fix something for nothing when they never sold it in the first place. I've seen this first hand when I used to work at a Holden and Toyota dealership years ago. Some people got a better deal by buying their car at another dealer 3 hours drive away and would then bring their car into the local dealer for a service and warranty work. The difference in the way those customers and their cars were treated compared to the loyal local customer was very noticeable.
Loyalty is all well and good and koudos to those here who live by that (notice I don't put your decision down or make you out to be a fool for your choice) but seeing as I'm in the armed forces, I don't have the luxury of staying where I bought the car until the warranty expires.
After moving from Townsville to Sydney it appears nothing has changed over the years as the customer service I received from my now local dealer when I had a minor warranty claim was absolute crud (rattle in door trim)! Geez, I wonder why I didn't go back to them for my service?

Just out of curiosity....who here is going to continue getting their car serviced at the dealer after the warranty expires or at how many kilometers would you go elsewhere....80k...100k etc? Be honest now!
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

Me for one, I'm also taking up the factory warranty extension and will extend the factory warranty by 2 years.

Extending it through VW directly, or the dealer locally? I think the former is three times the latter.

          Interesting choice.

Little confused though as you insist on genuine servicing by the dealer yet it could be questioned that after the factory warranty expires, you have such little faith in the actual car and it's reliability and quality that you have to purchase extended warranty for peace of mind I'm sure that's not the case though and hope you never have to use the extended warranty for anything.

VW warranty for an additional 2 years is only $1600. Dealer warranties are not worth the paper they are written on as they have too many limits and servicing conditions.

I may be a Neanderthal knuckle dragger, but I know the work done to my car...I wouldn't trust any VW Service center with my car, no matter what guys on here say on here...I use genuine parts, and have NEVER had any problems when it came to warranty issues.
Having seen it first hand in dealer services(VW included) using 1st and 2nd Year apprentices and unskilled Trades Assistants, especially to do the easier tasks(basic servicing, trim removal and repair, minor rebuilds, and assisting on major issues)I wouldn't be praising the 'skilled' VW Technicians too highlybecause these are usually the guys supervising.
It is a major feat to do a trade course, especially when you start from scratch. Most vehicular prinipals are the same. VW and other vehicle makers are just continuing a technique to convert chemical energy into mechanical energy that started long ago.
True, these VW Technicians have done extra courses associated with the operating systems of particular cars, but all the principles are basically the same, and common scan tools with downloadable updates are available to ANY workshop with the cash for them. This includes such large franchises as Ultra Tune. Don't write them off just because they don't have a VW symbol out the front dosn't mean they are crap.

I am interested in getting this, but is it still available if you purchased the car second hand? Its got a full year left as of today but I'm planning on keeping it for a lil longer than that Should I talk directly to VW AU? or do I ahve to deal with austral ....

You don't have to be the original purchaser but you HAVE to purchase it before the warranty runs out. Once the warranty runs out you can buy a cheaper VW second hand warranty which is limited like the other dealer warranties.

Any VW dealer can sell it, I'd talk to a few closer to the time and see what price they will do and if you can avoid giving any money to Austral.

Do not trust Ultratune in Windsor (or at Castle Hill)

Windsor said my daughters Astina needed new rear front shocks (they had been replaced by Mazda a few months prior).

Castle Hill serviced our neighbours car and never put an air filter in and left the sump plug loose.

This is true, the point I was trying to make is that is that it isn't bad that if it don't have a VW symbol out the front. People have to get out of their head that only "skilled VW factory trained technicians" will work on their car every time they drop it off. It don't take one of these to drop oil, change a filter, remove and replace a fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter, and scan for codes...They will get an apprentice to do it, just like at the workshops I worked at got me to do when I was an apprentice, and as you probably did too.
We all need to start somewhere in the trade, and workshops as a whole are there for one thing in the long run...To make money.

What I find most annoying with VW shops is that they seem to refuse to check any further than just reading off any error codes on the computer.

If you go in and explain the problem and even take the time to show them (take a drive if required) then they'll do what they can to fix it.

If on the other hand you get an ignorant person who comes in and whinges about a rattle from the back and then takes off because they're busy then what do you expect, they're not mind readers or miracle workers. You see this problem in all industries, people think they know all about the <computer/car/pda/tv/etc> yet don't think or care that if they want it fixed they need to describe it properly.

Take the time to explain the problem and even show it and you'll find it's fixed, act vague and not give the full details and they'll often miss it despite the best of intentions.
