Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • From Pacific to Transporter

Hi I am considering trading in the Golf with 16000klm on a Transporter with the same sort of mileage. So what I am really asking is, you ppl that have Transporters what is your opinion of them
    thanks

I'm happy with mine, done over 60,000km now. If you buy diesel make sure you use correct engine oil.
The T5 is comfortable van compare to other makes; I still enjoy driving it, every day. I'm glad that I made a switch from MB Vito.
    Good luck with your swap.

Almost everybody loves the drive, but some people (me included) are less impressed with reliability (particularly minor electrical stuff like locks etc).

ATM I'd probably still buy another one if I was in the market for a new'un.

There are big variations in power (77 - 128 Kw in the TDIs) and trim (base panel van through to Multivan Sports with all the bells and whistles).

      Very few V6s around.

      4motion adds to fuel consumption.

Tow bars are expensive, as are spare keys.

The OEM VW sliding windows all leak (even the latest Mk 8 version).

I know a guy with a low mileage SWB Auto 128Kw van that was offered a very low trade in by the local dealer, so don't pay too much for a secondhand one.

The earlier T5s (2004-2006) had a few problems (steering clonk, water pumps, turbos), but later ones had a few new issues (eg oil coolers).

If you have a look at the Brickyard (UK) site you can see all sorts of stuff about T5s

Just remember you tend to hear more from people with problems. The people who have zero problems have no reason to search out forums like this, let alone have anything to complain about ( IIRC its called "self-selecting bias or somesuch).

I wouldn't buy one unless I was quite sure it had all the oil changes done at the correct intervals and with the right VW spec oil.

BTW you might want to ask the mods to move this thread to the VWCV Watercooled Hub section, as that is where the T5ers are more likely to see it.

        Well I current drive a Golf Mk V Comfortline TDI and a T5 - Highline, 128Kw 4-Motion.
For long distances I will always take the T5. It feels safer (larger on the road), fuel consumption is OK - just, and I can move lots of gear in it.
MkV Comfortline is great for around town.
Both are 2005 models. Both have about 45K on the clock, and both have little niggles. Just had to replace the water pump in the T5 - $800 later The boot in the Golf stiicks in the hot weather. Has had work done to it, but it is still not right.
T5 lights are shocking, and need upgrading if you are doing any decent night travelling. I just had HID's fitted.
I sometimes think about what comes next, and I'm quite certain that the T5 will stay and the Golf will be the one to be upgraded.
        Good luck with your choice.

no kids.... no extra seats...... We shoot Clay Targets at various shooting clubs and was thinking of a bed and a fridge and a safe for the shotguns. By staying at the shooting grounds we wouldn't need the motels. So I would be driving up to 700klm each way so it needs to motor easily at 105klm/hr as shown on the GPS

Well that idea was no good. My knees are stuffed and to get into the Transporter is too hard on them. Looks like motels are still the go.

You on Glucosamine Les? Takes several weeks to build up some effect, but even ortho surgeons are recommending it these days.

Only drama is if you're allergic to shell fish, as it's basically crab shells etc.

Either that or he could have the Transporter slammed to the deck
