Air Con failure in my new 05 MK5 Comfortline :-(

Hi all,
Barely one week of owning this car, the air con failed me over the weekend. It's just blowing hot air. Funny thing was, the air con was very cold the day before I had to turn it off.

I was looking through the manual, hoping it would just be a fuse problem but couldn't find the fuse for the AC, only the blower and it's not a blower problem.

Anyone know what it could be? Compressor? Do you know how much I'm looking at paying? Man... this is not good. And I was enjoying driving the car too. Cheers.

thats bad luck mate. chances are it would be the compressor (hope its not!) gone, ive had 2 go in my 05.

As far as costs go, I dont think you are going to be impressed but I couldnt give you an exact figure. Extended warranty saved me on that one.

Thanks for the reply. If it turns out the compressor and considering the high failure rate of it (from the links Ben gave me), do you think the dealership will do "goodwill" warranty? If it is a defective product, usually they have to replace it regardless of the warranty right? Kinda like a product recall or something. Keeping my fingers crossed it's nothing major.

I had mine go in a similar way on my Polo GTI. It turned out that it had dumped its Refrigerant, and that the leak was in the T/X Valve and Evaporator assembly.

It depends how much did you pay for the car, I think that you still have some warranty.

I was only discussing this the other day and I was actually unaware of it (extended used car warranty) even existing. Yes it is available providing the vehicle is less than 10 years old (which it is in this case) and must have travelled less than 150,000 k's. http://www.volkswagen.com.au/etc/med...cy%2012.07.pdf

Like most used car warranties though, depending on the problem not everything will be covered so it would probably pay to check up discreetly before opting for it.

As Transporter said, depending on the State, you may be covered by a compulsory dealer's warranty anyway (not so if you bought privately). Certainly worth asking (but don't just take the dealer's word for it if they say "No", check with whoever reegulates used car dealers in your state).

I'd have thought it would have been covered under such warranty. That's one of the reasons I pay premium price for a used car in a yard in the past, it's covered for 3 months (or at least it is in NSW).

Press the dealer before you start asking how much it's going to cost me. If they get a sniff of that, it'll cost you the lot. If you suggest that it should be covered under the statutory warranty with the vehicle, I'm sure a much better arrangement (for you) can be made.

A/C failure

My A/C compressor lunched itself a couple of weeks back, it was replaced under the new car warranty (less than 3 years old). I asked how much for a compressor if it were out of warranty, about $1200 for the part only, which they also informed me it was an 'updated' part.

I brought my car to a local VW mechanic here in O'Connor (WA). He isolated the problem to be electrical but couldn't find anything on his computer that would help him solve the problem. I have to take it to the dealer. I know we have 3 VW dealers here in Perth metropolitan. Anyone has any recommendation which one? John Hughes in Vic Park is the closest to me. But I don't mind driving a bit. Cheers.
