Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Caution: rambling disjointed reminiscences below.

I guess I never really introduced myself here. I came, looking for info, and I'm still here. Benno's my name, and here is my story:

Well fellas, I just put a deposit on a 2008 GT Sport TDI/DSG/BT/TLA etc. A nice Silver one, with 9000km on the clock.

I drove the TSI and absolutely loved it, but I kinda feel that the TDI is a better fit for me right now - it doesn't tempt me to nail it all the way to the red line every time, but when I do give it a boot full fuel economy won't suffer too much.

There's a few things I'd like to do to the Golf, but nothing major. Sat nav, colour code the bumpers, maybe new wheels and coilovers. Possibly even chip it... I guess it depends if I buy a house this year or not.

So I guess all that means Eleanor is up for retirement now. In a nick of time, no less. Her brakes died the other day and the old tin worm is taking his toll. I'd like to keep her as a project car, but we'll see how time and finances go. Not to mention space.

    She was a sweetie alright.

I wonder if the Golf will still be going in 50 years? Somehow I doubt it.

Congrats on the new purchase Benno I think you will notice a slight difference in performance compared to the old beetle as well, especially on the hilly bits Don't forget to throw up some pics when you get it, Enjoy

Play the numbers game - With 4 billion beetles sold theres bound to be some left on the roads after 50years, there are plenty of mk1 golfs getting around 30years later and these diesel engines last forever.

          Time will tell.

TSI. VW's figures bear it out too.

Although I spent more time in the TSI, and I was by myself, on familiar roads - both TDIs I was reluctant to push too hard because the owner was with me in one, and the dealer TDI I drove only had a few hundred k's on the clock.

The TSI just pulls consistently through nearly the entire rev range, whereas the TDI has a comparatively limited power band. I love that surge of torque from the TDI though, and it doesn't bait me to tag the redline every shift. I think I'd a.) burn heaps of fuel in a TSI and b.) lose my license very quickly.

Should pick the car up wed/thu

Any photogs on here? I'd love to borrow a rig to get some rolling shots with....

Oh yeah, re: longevity, the beetle was such a simple car you can kind of see how it can be maintained and repaired for 50 years... I don't think the current Golf falls into the same category!
