Some condensing of an article from Science Is Golden by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Ch. Fuelish Engine Idling, in regards to idling your car to warm up your engine.

    On bore glazing.
"If a brand new or reconditioned engine is badly run in by the owner, the engine can burn too much oil for the rest of it's life. This is done by glazing the bore. Can be done by idling from cold for too long as the oil is not up too temperature and the rings wear down the cylinder walls and the second is driving on cruise control on a flat surface with not changing speed for long periods of time as the constant engine speed has the same effect. The bore glazing will cause oil to slip past the rings and out through the exhaust."

    On new engine idling.
"Excessive idling can also damage new engines. Inside a new engine, the piston rings need a reasonable load in order to 'settle' into the grooves on the walls of the piston. On a new or reconditioned engine, you should accelerate away within a few seconds of starting, but not with a lead to keep a steady load on the rings. Keep the revs low for the first 3-5 minutes to give the oil a chance to warm up and get thinner so it can flow easily."

Quote from Ford USA chief powertrain engineer, "Engines run best at their design temperature". Gentle driving is the best way to get your engine up to temperature.

Not my ideas but I respect his research, references and articles.
    Cheers,
    Trent

I could've typed the full thing out but, A. I can't be bothered and B. I don't think copywrite infringement is a "socially acceptable" topic or pastime on a public forum.
Also forgot to mention that his references were the likes of Popular Mechanics and some mainstream media publications. Can probably find their references as well if you want to follow the trail.

You have the added advantage that the transmission, brakes and tyres are all run in, so you don't have to be as gentle on them as new.

I have used this method after my 2.5 subaru stroker motor got rebuilt after 5 years of abuse. Definitely works.

I have thrashed every car I have ever owned usually straight out the dealership.

You only have a 1000km window with which to bed the rings totally into the bores. If you miss this the engine will make less power and wont have the tight seal of a bedded in motor.

Because motors are pre-run in during engine tests at the factory, you basically need to thrash it straight away.

If it has been rebuilt then slow for first 700km then thrash it like its a red headed stepchild.

So I picked up the GTI Friday afternoon, drove it for about 3 km's before a loud hissing noise was coming from the engine when under boost. Pulled up at the lights and the car stalls. I was about 1 km from Barloworld so I dropped the car in and they told me it was too hot to connect the hose that had come off and to come back Saturday morning.

Saturday morning I go in and pick up the car after being told the hose has been connected and then tested and road tested and ready to go. I drove about 5 k's down the road and the hissing was back, no stalling this time but about 500 metres from Barloworld, the temp guage shoots right up and a loud beeping comes from the MFD as well as a "turn off engine - check coolant". I limp the car the 500 metres to Barloworld and turn it off hoping it hasnt affected the brand new engine.

I'm guessing that "road test" means someone drove it aroud the block!!

                    The saga continues....

mate. my advise to you is to start writing a email to VW Germany cc'ing to VW Australia. Complain ,complain and bloody complain somemore.I cant understand how patient you have been .I would be blowing smoke out of my ears. Its the only way you are going to get somewhere with this saga.
what about all your lost time? lost time on rego/insurance? have they given you a courtesy car???

I had a TDI Passat for the first 2 weeks and now have a TDI Golf.

Ill wait until the car is fixed before I write my letter.

Barloworld have been pretty good so far, VW originally wanted to re-build my engine but Barloworld talked them into a new engine so I really can't complain - except for the "road tests" they have done.

I havent had to pay for a courtesy car - the way I figure so far is that you get more bee's with honey!!

I agree about getting better results if you are polite and civilised.

Sounds like it is time to have a friendly but serious chat with the service manager or workshop foreman and ask him/them to personally ensure that ALL the connections on your new motor have been connected correctly and tightened properly, and all fluids have been double checked.

It is better for all concerned if the job is done properly.

The foreman is going to take the car home tonight after they have worked on it today and he will d the same for the next 3 days until they are certain everything is where it is supposed to be and no hoses come off!!

The only thing I can really complain about so far is the fact that their road tests need a little work.

I've been pretty happy with Barloworld so far.

I must say you're pretty easily pleased then. In my opinion if your car wasn't right the first time they gave it back to you I would've got right up them. Procedures and things like road tests are in place to make sure what happened to your car doesn't happen and basically if they'd done their job properly and thoroughly you'd have your car back right now.
