  • Query about a 2nd Hand Golf

    Hi guys,
I test drove a 2nd hand GT Sport TDI the other day. Schmick as, but one question for you: the stated fuel economy on the computer was 7l/100km, averaged over something like 2000 km. Nearly all of the posts I've seen on this forum were quoting figures a fair bit lower than this. Is this something I should be concerned about?

    Cheers

    Hey Benno,

Don't pay too much attention to the figures on the onboard computer, I have just over 7,500 k's up on mine now and it has averaged around 6.5 l / 100 from new. A lot depends on how it's driven as well because although I don't thrash mine I still give it a bit of stick and the fuel economy is always much the same per tank full. If I drove my previous car, a BA XR6 Falcon the same way I drive the GT Sport it would have given me figures of at least 14 l / 100 in comparison, easily.

Cheers mate. All these people quoting figures like 5.6 l/100km had me worried!

I think you'll find those sort of figures could be easily attained from one of these if you are doing a lot of highway driving, but the amazing part is that even with a fair bit of stop start traffic driving included they still give fantastic fuel economy and the way they perform still leaves me gobsmacked for a 2.0 litre diesel. What's with the one you drove, how many k's, manual or DSG? dealer or private....?

Private sale - a GT TDI/DSG with 8.5k on the clock. He wants 36k... gonna see if I can drive another similar one tomorrow at the dealer, 15k on the clock and asking 34k.

The fuel economy figures quote 3 figures:
            City
            Highway
Combined (see next para for how this is worked out)

"Australian Standard 2877 & UN ECE R101 testing involves a mixture of urban and highway drive cycles. The test comprises an 11 kilometre trip at an average speed of 33.6 km/h. Approximately two thirds of the test simulates urban stop-start type driving (averaging 18.8 km/h), while the remaining third simulates highway driving (at speeds over 100 km/h). The test is conducted in controlled laboratory conditions to ensure parity between figures."

My guess is that (like a lot of folks) the Highway figure is often quoted.
Real-world numbers are generally higher and (obviously) depend on how heavy your right foot is.

Just to say WOW, I'm surprised there are 2nd hand GT Sports for sale already. These cars are only a bit over a year old.

              Is it an ex-lease?

like previously said - dont worry to much about the fuel consumption... it's all depending on how the car was driven before ...

and with a price tag of 36k i'd be looking into a GTI for that price .... or even fork out the extra $$$ for a r32

good luck with what ever u decide..

Yeah it does seem a bit dear. I'll see if I can bargain with either of them.

It is very much a buyers market at the moment - even the dealers are willing to "deal" on current stock. The price people ask for a private sale is often way above what they can actually get for them.

If it is only a couple of $1,000 more for a new one I'd go for the new one every time (unless I already knew the seller and the car very well indeed).

I just got a 07 GTI/DSG/Leather for 33k inc stamps/rego. What ever you buy you'll be impressed, but a GTI is what I'd recommend

Drive a GTI before u sign the deed, even a new one should be around ~43K drive away. add 2k for the DSG

Isn't the GTI a bit firmer than the GT? I'm almost considering a Pacific just for comfort reasons...

Yeah basically but drive the GTI on 17 inch wheels - it makes a difference

You will be happy with whatever you buy, especially 2.0L diesel. I've got the 1.9L, and my first speeding fine for 25 years
