Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R32 open door noise ?

I'm not concerned about the noise just curious about what it might be.

When I unlock the car with the remote, as soon as I then open the drivers door there's a noise like a small electric motor driving something for 1 - 2 seconds.

    Anyone got any ideas ?

If youve got the RNS510 sat nav then it could be that.
I hear mine when i unlock then open the drivers door.
I think its the HD spinning up or something.

Its the door lock letting the ECU know your entering the car and the ECU then primes the fuel pump ready for starting.

Is the noise really a problem?

Yes, it is louder than previous vehicles (some ... no noise at all), but it is comforting that your .:R has sensed that you want to go for a drive, and it is readying itself for you.

Your other car wasn't anywhere near as smart.

If the noise is a problem get yourself another dumb car that doesn't think.

Excellent. I had been wondering about this too. I thought it could have been the air con blowing out stale air or something like that. But the fuel pump makes much more sense.

trust me when i say that it is better to hear the noise than not!...
had this happen to me a few years ago with my forrester... opened the door and didn't hear the fuel pump priming... turned key and motor only ran for about 2 seconds then stalled...
fuel pump had failed. what a pain that was to get replaced.

It happens across the range of Dubs ... my Polo does the same.

The first time I noticed my dub make this sound it reminded me of the way maserati's cambiocorsa box primes for at least 5 sec before the car gets moving. It's like a transformer coming to life!

I find it interesting that all the VWs I've ever been in do this, but all Audis i've ever been in prime the fuel pump when you put the key in the ignition.
