  • help mk5 gti wheel into tdi steering wheel controls

hey guys, need some help - long story short

brought a mkv gti steering wheel to put in my TDI - the gti wheel has no steering wheel controls on it, i have steering wheel controls on the current one in the car and i know the to panels where the controls are can be removed but wondering can it be put in and wired up....

took it to my mechanic and asked him to swap it over (with the airbag) and was told he couldn't get the steering wheel controls onto the new one to wired up and working...

just wondering is this true ?? cause he mentioned that he'll take it off my hands if it didn't fit b4 he looked at it... (brought the wheel cheap)

is there any way i can get the wheel to take the steering wheel controls so that i can have this fitted..

any help would be great, thanks in advance,

    Will

Oh dear. Post up pics of the GTi wheel. This will help greatly.

There are three versions, one doesn't have provision for MFSW (multi function switches), One has provision for MFSW but not paddles, and finally paddles and MFSW.

You also need a suitable clock spring and steering wheel controller.

    Try searching vwvortex for MFSW.

    Cheers,

    David

awesome thanks david, i believe this version doesn't have any provision for the MFSW as when i took the panels off the wheel there was no holes nothing to put the steering wheel controls in there was only just the 2 holes that clip in for the panel...

i'll just do a search on vw vortex...

correct - you can adapt it, but it is a lot of work - best to sell it & get a GTI wheel with controls (been there - done that)

no worries - i've decided to part with it ... pity thou cause i picked it up and got it and it's brand new and was super cheap - got another one with the controls on its way...

do i need to get the control module as well to get the controls working?? or is the control module only needed for the paddle shift wheel?

            It depends,

If your car already has MFSW - then it already has a controller - so should be sweet.

If it does not, then yes, the controller is required (its in the lower 1/2 of the column covers).

Good thing is the slip ring is the same.

You also will need to program your CAN Controller to suit as well.

Reading your original post - it should be a straight bolt up job for your car

Post 75 onwards should help give you some ideas. The rear horn pad clips are tricky without a mirror, they just push outwards, and you'll need a "less than 10mm" allen key, but bigger than 9mm for the main bolt.

Otherwise dead easy. You'll love it!

i've already sold the one without the controls - the new SW comes next week with controls and paddles - hopefully can get the paddles to work ... would be awesome mod to get the 'flappy paddle gearbox' hehe

did a search on vortex and found a awesome DIY write up :

will be very helpful if anyone else is thinking of doing the same

Yeah I am doing the same. If you have vagcom, look up the part number of your steering wheel controller and the slip ring.

Also look at or do a search on
