  • Lane change indicator option

My wife came home today and said she had trouble with the indicator as everytime she touched lightly it woul flash 3 times. I told her it was the lane change feature. I'm not a fan of it either so I decided to set it to off.

Out comes manual and I look it up and it's under Lights and Vision called Lane Flash or something like at. Anyway, try as I may, I couldn't find it. I thought I may have fiddled the setting s at some stage and lost the option, so I reset the factory settings but it still wasn't there.

Anyway, about 15 minutes later after comparing the option screens line by line, I noticed Comfort Indic. What could that be? It was set to ON. So, I thought, I'll set it off and voila!, no more triple flash.

Why, I ask would they name it something different from the manual and something as cryptic as Comfort Indicator?

That's not the only oddity. The option for setting windows to open and close with the remote is called Convenience option. Why not call it Window settings or similar?

    Crazy.

I find this to be one of the best features ever!

Only problem is that I wish there was a way to cancel the 3 flashes if you've knocked the stalk accidently - but that hardly happens for me

Flick the switch the other way (all the way) and then cancel it.

Otherwise resetting the car will do it as well (ignition off and on )

Its now standard on most European cars. It's a great safety feature and your alteration of this safety may well compromise anyone driving the car.

i believe if you switch the indicator on the same way again it cancels the previous one.

I disabled this feature not long after getting my car. I hate it. I found it dangerous as im not in control 100% of when the indicators were on or off. And the cancellation procedure is not intuitive at all. I dont need to be distracted from driving by such silly things. If i want my indicator to flash ill turn it on. If it want it to stop. Ill turn it off.

In regards to the naming of these features. Perhaps they are direct translations from german.

It is the Comfort Indic. setting.

Turn it off and so do your one touch indicators.

I'm sorry, I disagree. The issue is that if you just happen to touch it lightly, it sets off the 3 flashes, especially if you had no intention of changing lanes. And that is potentially more dangerous. Better to deliberately hold down/up the indicator stalk for the required time it takes for you to change lanes (might be more than 3 flashes) and then release. No one's safety is compromised by switching the feature off. The indicator is only on when the stalk is either held or clicked in the desired position. Anyone can quickly figure that out.

If you want to discuss compromising safety, we could discuss another standard European feature which for some reason has migrated to right hand drive cars in this country - the fact the indicator stalk is on the left hand side. Why? Most cars in this country have it on the right. It's not so bad if you're driving an automatic, but I can imagine it might present some problems for drivers in manual cars.

When I was in Europe, I had no problem flicking the indicator with my left hand and changing gears with my right. It came naturally. But it would have been a bit confusing if the indicator stalk was on the right.

I wonder how many of us here have at some stage or another indicated with our wipers when changing lanes?

For my 20 and 22 year daughters and my wife - they don't have any of these problems you're experiencing. They started their driving in the Forester and switched to VW, no problems with the indicators wipers took one or two days to used to. Wife drives Forester and from time to time VW and she doesn't complain.

I drive all types of brands in my business and never have I got confused or upset with indicator switches. Hang on, I did it wrong in one of the Spanish Holden Barinas! I thought it was Japanese and used it incorrectly. Its just like driving a car, you just have to use a bit of nouse!!
I really dont think there is any problem with it on the LHS with Euro cars and the 3 flashes do it for me!!

I find in the manual, the one touch 3 flash actually makes driving easier, I'm not fiddling to turn off the indicator if the corner isn't tight enough.

personal preference, I love it, you don't share the same love, fair enough and respected.
