Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf Key Cutting in Sydney

Anyone know where I can get a new VW Golf key cut in Sydney, preferably southern Sydney?

I don't need the electronics, just a key that I can use to lock the car and stick in the wetsuit when I go for a surf.

What do others do with their key when going to the beach?

The VW dealer quoted me over $200 for a new key without electronics. Told me they need to come from Germany.

Can't help you with a Sydney locksmith (I can recommend Canberra Locksmiths in Phillip), but any with a good computerised cutter should be able to cut the blade. They may even have a key blank (without the immobiliser chip), and it should cost heaps less than $200 (but at that price it probably comes cut, and with the correct immobiliser chip).

Key blanks are usually available from ebay pretty cheaply, but shop around, prices vary.

Remember to wipe the salt off the blade before you put it in the lock cylinder.

I leave the full key hidden (very well hidden indeed), in the vehicle. I have heard of people using various waterproof containers, but full keys with remotes are very expensive to risk getting salt water in them.
