  • Considering a Jetta - FSI or New TSI?

    Hi,

First post here so please be kind...

Although not given the 100% green light we are seriously considering a new Jetta for our next car. I looked at the liberty, accord euro and mazda6 and the jetta just seems to be number one in the things we want.

So, I have been reading that Jetta's are now coming with the 1.4 TSI engine... as I was originally looking at the FSI. I have read some great reviews about this engine and it seems the way to go... however I may be swayed if I can get a good deal on the FSI.

However although both are recommended to run on 98RON is this a necessity?

How many people have seen the new TSI?

    Thanks

who told you the jetta comes with the 1.4tsi? the jetta's do say "tsi" on the back but its actually referring to the regular 2.0 turbo found in the golf GTI. as far as i know the jetta doesnt come with the real 1.4tsi.

according to the vw website the jetta comes in the 2.0 petrol, the 2.0 turbo diesel and 2.0 turbo petrol.

and yes, please run the car on 98ron theres really no reason not to. if you cant afford the extra dosh for premium fuel then imo you shouldnt be buying a car that is supposed to be run on it. no offense intended

welcome to the forum and the land of vw's

      Given the choice between a 1.4TSi & the 2.0 NA, I'd take the 1.4.

Why? boost from (almost) idle upwards. Flatter torque curve. Tuneability later if you think it's underpowered.

BUT! If I had a choice between the Jetta & a Skoda Octavia I'd take the Octavia.

Why? Better 1.8TSI engine. More standard equipment. More versatile luggage space. Minimum 95RON so no dramas if you live where 98RON is unavailable. Better value for money.

The 09 Jetta's are now going to have the 1.4 TSI engine from the Golf GT. It's not on the VW website but on this forum and talking to a dealer VW are no longer going to make the 2.0 FSI and use the 1.4 TSI instead.

Mischa, we have a member who has taken delivery of a 1.4 TSI Jetta.

Welcome to the forum Euro33, before I bought my 2.0TFSI Jetta I looked at exactly the same cars as you listed, I have never for one second regretted going with the VW. I haven't compared the 2.0FSI and 1.4TSI myself but my guess would be the TSI would be slightly more economical. A comparison of the equivalent Golf models would verify that either way.

Whichever you go for, I'm certain you would be happy.

          Cheers

You're right. The FSI Jetta is now 'end of life', being replaced by a slightly detuned version of the GT TSI motor (118kW from memory). VWA have been very slack in not updating their website (maybe they have some stock to move first?) and 1.4TSI Jettas have already started being delivered.

Phaeton has a piece on the new model here:

Personally I'm stoked with the TSI - my sister has a 2.0 FSI and it feels a ton less 'lively' than the TSI (apologies to owners of this venerable motor!).

              I have a MY2007 Jetta FSI auto,and love the engine,as it is very smooth,very quiet,powerful enough,and economical.
I can highly reccomend, although the new spec 2009 model has the 7 speed DSG gearbox,so this car is very high tech.
I also looked at the same cars as you,and am really pleased with my choice,as the Subaru never appealed to me that much, and the Accord Euro and Mazda 6 have both been replaced by complertely new models,so I would have had an old shape car.
I actually prefered the look of the previous Accord Euro and Mazda 6.
Go with the Jetta,it is very classy, and you will not regret it.

Just check on how much insurance will cost you before signing on the dotted line to buy the 1.4 - some insurance companies freak out at the idea of a supercharger AND a turbo

IIRC there may be a thread somewhere where insurance costs are discussed, try a search.

Volkswagen are officially only launching the Jetta 1.4 TSI in January or February, although a few have arrived in the country, and have allready been sold.

Eh, I had the chance to drive a Tsi Jetta when my car went for a service, it was a loaner.
I wasnt sure if it had a 2.0t and i was too used to the revo tune in mine cos the Tsi was so unexciting that even my wife said it felt so much slower then our car"Stock". Plus to put the boot in I couldnt get the fuel consumption under 9 litres per 100k's.
It had a tad over 5000kms on it. My 2.0t even 2000k's was returning low 7's per 100.
So I was rather let down in both respects. I definitely think the tdi would keep it honest in performance and whip it for economy.
So thats my experience with the new Tsi thus far.
2007 Jetta Fsi-Dsg-and a twist of REVO Stage 1 for added thrills, wifeys ride.

Definitely the TSI IMO. I came from a 2003 Mazda 6 and drove the new 6, Euro (previous model and Liberty (who the hell doesn't have fold down rear seats nowadays?) and came up trumps with the Golf GT TSI and haven't looked back since!
I drove the 2.0FSI to get a baseline and really wasn't impressed, and it is certainly a less powerful motor than all the other options you're considering. I haven't driven a Jetta but imagine that they'd be the same as the Golf. After 6 months of ownership the 1.4 TSI still puts a grin on my face

i dont think a 2.0L turbo can really be compared to a 1.4L...

You must be talking the TFSI, not FSI (110kw and 200nM). Only one letter different but a very important letter!
