  • DIY Rim repair for stock mk5 GTI

Hey all, I posted this in the wheel section but didn't receive much love so thought I'd repost here if thats ok.

Anyway, I have some fairly small scrapes on my stock wheels and wanted to clean them up a little. Called a mobile repair guy and he wanted to charge $150 per wheel!

So I thought I'd give it a go myself. This kit looks like a fairly foolproof way of doing it - (saves me the trouble of buying full bottles of individual primer/paint etc that I'll never use again... touch wood). I understand I may not get the same results as if I use 4 different grades of sandpaper/Wurth spraypaint/lacquer etc etc which is fine with me.

So... has anyone used one of these kits or something similar before?

id be worried that the silver paint they supply wont match the finish on the OEM wheels. Not all silvers are the same. Colour matching paint is not always so simple.
Perhaps have a look at a wheel repair service that isnt onsite. you may find its cheaper. But wasting money on a job that isnt 100% will just end up costing you more in the long run if you are fussy about your car

Funny this should be brought up, as I just did it the other day. As Tim mentioned, getting the right colour is the hardest part. But if it's close enough you'll be able to blend it in and no-one will be the wiser. I just sanded with a couple of different grades wet & dry, sprayed very lightly just enough colour to cover up the area, sprayed about 3 coats of clear coat - and now even I can't detect where it has been repaired!

The colour I used was "Mercury Silver", in those little cans you get from Supercheap, for my MkV GTI wheel. I do have a local automotive paint shop who can use their machine to analyse the paint to create a perfect match and then put it in a spray can for you, but for such a small job I thought I'd just try and find a close match in the pre-mixed paint.

Just remember, be very sparing with the colour (more coats will make it go darker). Use light coats, you don't want any runs. Blend it in, otherwise it WILL stand out! Oh yeah, and make sure you do a good sanding job, because the paint makes any imperfections stand out, rather than cover them up.

I'll rekon leave it to the Pros....For 1 Rim, it probably costs around $120AUD to have the pro taking care of it. Dont try to save some money and end up paying even more...

Cost me about $20 + my time. You wont get it done in WA for $120.

Although, I agree, if you've never done any painting on a car before (and had it turn out well) then don't do a wheel as your first attempt!

I wouldn't normally be game to DIY, but I drive to work and can't afford to be without my car for even one day.

And I have two wheels to repair, so that's ~$300 at the pros.

I guess if i do stuff up I'll only have wasted $30, and I can always take it to the shop afterwards...

Acrylic thinners will get off what ever you put on, as long as it hasn't been on for more than a few days.

Does anyone actually know what the paint code is for mk5 gti alloy wheels? All i got from VW was colour code 88Z - which aint in system.

I tried one of these kits. Wasn't impressed myself.
