  • mk5 brake upgrades

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has figured out any cheap and easy tricks yet for upgrading the brakes on the GTI/GT? what i mean is using some combination of discs and caliper carriers from other VAG cars for a big brake upgrade that wont break the bank (ha, ha, ha). (no i'm not after brake pad suggestions )

or is r32 brakes the only option we have at this stage? or could r32 discs be used somehow with the standard calipers?

    lets hear the ideas!

I think R32 brakes are the cheapest upgrade option that I know of .

IMO the R32 upgrade would be the best bang for buck upgrade. The braking improvement is apparently brilliant (especially in combination with s/s brake lines and better pads). They'll also squeeze inside standard 17" wheel as well.

There's a guy in the US called danGSR who has a lot of know-how on this mod - do a search for his stuff on GolfMkV.
This is a good place to start:
I know this has been covered before, but I'm really excited about my newest upgrade. After driving an Audi TT, I found the brakes on my stock GTI poor in comparison. So after discussing with Dan GSR the available options, I initially decided to upgrade lines and pads. Well, I found a GREAT...

Another one to look at for general info on DIY brake work is this one:

Tools needed: - 2 ton Jack and jack stands (preferably 4)...

Any other upgrades involve basically replacing the standard discs with similarly sized grooved and/slotted aftermarket discs. These LOOK good, but their performance improvement is probably a mute point.

I've deliberately avoided suggesting Brembos or APs as you said you wanted cheap - Brembos pads only would pay for a full R32 upgrade

R32 Brakes would be the goods...But...When it comes to replacing the rotors somewhere down the track, it will kill you...$700 for OEM.

Thats why I have shied away from doing the R32 conversion to my Polo. Why not look at a decent set of slotted rotors with a good set of pads. I loved the Bendix Ultmates, and I coupled these to DBA slotted rotors on my last car.

Of course, this is totally up to you, and my last car is nothing like the Golf GT, but I was extremely surprised in the increase in the braking performance, and think this may be a worthwhile option before commiting to something bigger.

Back to the brakes I'm about to go the dba cross drilled and slotted way. Coupled with the right pads (bendix ultimates) they are a awesome stopping machines I have done that upgrade to all my cars and it's well worth it. Why pay big money for slightly uprated r32 brakes when u can go cross drilled and slotted front and rears. My mate has already gone that way on his gti and the difference is astounding..... Plus they look the part
Good bye GTI Hello Golf R
