Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Reverse Lights - Quick Q

    Hi guys,
Just a quick question, I have a Golf GTI, when reversing I'm noticing there's only 1 white light coming on at the back. Is this how it's supposed to be or are both meant to come on?

Please let me know so I can hopefully get it checked out tomorrow. It's only 1 month old and I barely drive it.

    Thanks!

It's on the passenger side (left side). The other light is the fog light.

In Europe, the arrangement is reversed with the fog on the left and the reverse light on the right.

In Australia, we could have done without the fog light. An additional reversing light would have been better.

When I picked up my car, the sales rep told us about this. Maybe they should have mentioned it to you when you got yours.

Yer they didn't, they mentioned a few other things though. My family just noticed it while I was reversing out of the garage, else who knows how long it would have been until I noticed it

I strongly suggest you RTM as it covers all of these areas.

And you would also have noted that the Golf does monitoring of any blown globes and will even tell you which one blew (left front headlight for example) if you have a full height mfd.

So the question is, can you ditch the fog light and get a 2nd reverse light in, even if it doesnt do anything?

Yes but you need to change over the housing for a european one on the drivers side (LHD country) and then modify the harness in the hatch to run the reverse over to the fog (or you could do this where it plugs into the controller under the dash).

I'm looking at placing some lights down the bottom of the bumper recessed back in (luxeon or similar units) to assist when reversing plus have a camera I'm fitting now.
