Hey faisan (I am guessing you are Mr Murano on Whirlpool?),

I don't know where you live in Perth but I can highly recommend Greg Peers at Wangara VW.

They are a new dealership and the sales staff are on a set salary - not commission, so they seem to be more willing to bargain.

I looked at everything around that $40k price, and in that size sedan. So XR5 Mondeo, Accord, even had a quick squizz at Volvos etc.

And yeah, just get the Jetta.

BUT $40 WITH LEATHER and on roads!!! Man, I STRUGGLED hardcore round the end of the finacial year to get the RRP as driveaway, much less with leather.

I was getting 7.5s with petrol on my old run to work, which was partly stop start, and the rest sitting at about 60kmh but constant. Now in normal city traffic its just under 9 most weeks.
Haha Dave, I looked at the new mondeo and Focus XR5 too, wrote them off pretty quickly though, they feel so cheap inside (sorry to anyone that owns one)

        Hay Man,

I bought the a Jetta back in 06, just as they came out, and loved it! Mine was a reflex silver, with leather, bi-xenons and 18"s. I felt it was always the best car in the lot! I too was about to buy a top of the range Euro, but felt as though the deal they offered was rubbish! So I turned them down, found the Jetta and didn't look back....well, until they brought out the GTI Pirelli...but that's another thread!

So, yes the Jetta is a great car, certainly has it's sporty atributes, and plenty of room for the back seat drivers. You'll also LOVE the boot space

So, if you want somone to nudge you over the line on the purchase, I'm your man. BUT, don't expect the same build quality as the Japs...not sure why, but they do seem to have a few more rattles in them then the Mazda's I had prior...but then again, I did just buy another Mark V.

        Good luck on you decision.

Had the Jetta for 7 days today TDi 2.0L manual. Two words "love it". The feel is solid and the technology I am still reading through the manual.

I had the iPod adapter fitted and recommend it, its the easiest way to carry several thousand songs and listen to pod casts of shows etc via the stereo and steering wheel buttons.

Bought mine for the 5 star Euro safety rating after the last car I owned was written off. Due to little one in the family I wanted something safe. Try a diesel turbo if you can aswell as a petrol. Mine's Platinum grey.

          Cheers and welcome

          Jason

            Yep thats me

I work in Telco sales so I know a few people who are in the car industry. I have been referred to the Dealer Principal at Wangara VW already so if all goes well, I will buy from there. Its not close to where I live but that ok.

I have been warned to stay away from Osborne Park. Apparently their service aint the best.

Compared to the Euro Accord, IMO the VW is superior. In regards to your specific questions:
              - more back seat room in the Golf/Jetta - a small but noticable difference;
              - significantly better fuel economy and especially performance from the Golf;
              - better refinelment in the VW. It's the small things that make the VW much nicer to drive - eg. the lovely smooth throttle response vs the Honda's jerky throttle, which makes peak-hour traffic a nighmare. Also, the Honda's paint is ridiculously soft - it's already covered in scratches and marks where as the Golf is unmarked (touch wood).

In my honest opinion there is no comparison in refinement and quality - I've found the Honda to be way over-rated in this regard.

Thanks for your feedback SS. It was most helpful.

I agree that the Honda throttle can be jerky. Our Jazz is a CVT and very jerky at low speeds. Its actually really irritating me.

Good news that the back seat is bigger. I find the rear seat room in the Accord Euro fine so if the Jetta is bigger, I will be happy.

I just want to try something non Japanese this time around. VW seems to be better value than the other Euro brands.

Is there anything you guys don't like about the Jetta that I should know about?

I have had my Jetta for almost 2 years now,and it has done 34000 kilometers, and each time I get into it,I think to myself LOVE THIS CAR.
The feel of it is very good, love the look, interior, safety and luxury features.
I wanted an Accord Euro, but found it a bit boring.
I did not really want a Mazda 6,but thought it was a little bit more exciting than the Honda.
Then looked at the VW,and thought it was the best of all 3.
Am thrilled I deceided against the other 2,as they have both changed shape, and I reckon the Jetta will have better resale value.
Having lived in America and South Africa, this is my 4th VW.
I have also owned a Ford and GM product, and in my family we have had BMWs,Mercedes,Audis, and Toyotas.
The VWs have been superb, and so have the Toyotas.
The others have been a bit of a mixed bag.
Only issues with the Jetta have been an assortment of rattles, squeeks, and tingles...
But good luck with it,and let us know what you deceide.
                I highly reccomend.
You will fall in love with the brand.

Thanks guys! I have decided on the Jetta and pending a test drive, I will place an order Hopefully the front seats are comfy enough to suit my large frame and big butt

Does anyone know how much the factory lip kit costs? its not on their price list.

The kit looks really good even with the factory alloys. If the price is reasonable, I might forgo the 18's for the kit

First a bright Red Jetta,a colour not offered in Australia, and then a Golf Plus inside the showroom...
Right hand drive,so maybee the UK or New Zealand...
                      Or Singapore,Hong Kong,Japan or Ireland.
South Africa does not have the Golf Plus..
And well done on your choice, please keep us all posted with your purchase.

Ok I just came back from a test drive and here are some initial thoughts:

                                - I love the DSG gearbox! its so smooth and you can barely notice that its changing gears!

                                - Power isnt as huge as I thought it would be but this was a brand new car that wasnt run in yet so it would be better as it loosens up. There was a hint of turbo lag but once going, it was quick enough. Long term, I may be getting it chipped.

                                - front seats are very supportive and comfortable. Overall dash is good quality and doesnt feel plasticy. The real aluminum strips are a nice touch

                                - Back seat room is quite tight. If I was driving, then there isnt much room behind me. I cant remember for sure but it feels slightly smaller than the Accord Euro but about the same as the Subaru Liberty. The headroom in the rear is a bit tight also. If I sit up straight, my hair touches the roof.

                                - I like how the front arm rest is adjustable. Its normal setting is a tad low but I like how you can tilt it up. Doing so leaves a gap in the centre console but its ok.

                                - No Aux input is a bummer. Its MP3 capable now so thats a plus. I am going to get the AVC9000 though so its not critical anyway.

So all up, I do like it. I will buy one but now I need to choose a colour! I was initially looking at the graphite blue but it the flesh it wasnt as metallicy as I though it would be if that makes sense. I think it will be a choice between white and silver and maybe platinum grey.
