  • Why reading the manual is a good idea

I parked my car this morning and opened the door and the car beeped at me. I checked the lights and they were off, so, got out and locked up. Come round front and the left hand parking light is on. Thought this might be "come home" function but it was broad daylight.

Got back in car and checked switches. All off. Then saw indicator stalk was in down position. Ah ha! Put it back to nuetral and light went off. Put it to right-side and right hand parking light goes on.

Didn't know the car had this feature. Until now.

    Lesson learnt. Read manual.

    The manual has some gems...

Also, the manual must be the only one with instructions on how to do 'burn out' starts (using DSG and the 'launch control') though presumably manual gearbox cars don't need instructions...

I particularly like the way these instructions also carry a warning to be considerate of others...

I was reading a recent post in another forum about a wife complaining their new Golf was "bonging" at her. Turns out she'd put a bag of groceries on the front seat and the car thought they should be restrained with a seat belt

Of course the MFD was also saying "Please fasten seatbelt", but she hadn't bothered to look at that.

My car has this feature too; I too got worried when I didn't know why it was still on, until I saw my indicator stalk in the wrong position.

A lot of European cars have this feature. I had a 1971 Beetle which had it so it's been around for quite a while. Just another smart idea to save on power usage.

I believe in Europe and here too, it is required by law to leave your parking lights on if you are parked on an unlit street, or you are a certain amount of metres away from available street lighting.

I actually do this when parking in the dark alley next to my local Nandos.

This feature goes all the way back to at least the Mk III.

I think it's a mandatory feature in european cars, just like the rear fog light.
I know dad's Merc has it (on light switch not blinker stalk) and my bro used to have Porsche 944 yonks ago also had it...
