Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Comfortline steering wheel

I suffer from sweaty hands in the summer so I've always had a soft leather steering wheel on my cars.

My MarkV Comfortline apparently has a leather steering wheel but dont know if its age (2005, 95K kms) but if it is leather its now quite hard.

I note the GTI wheel looks a different sort of leather ... which gets me finally to my question

Can I replace the standard steering wheel in my Comfortline with another, say a GTI wheel?

    TIA

It shouldn't be a problem, although an awkward job, disabling the airbag etc...

you can buy GTI wheels from you're dealer and get them retrofitted.. and if you have DSG they can wire it up to your trans but it aint cheap

I'm sure you can find someone on here with a GT series who has upgraded to a GTI and buy their old leather, but less "sporty" wheel from them. i recently sold mine for just under $100.

The cheapest way to get a GTI wheel I found was from Germany, but most will cost about $500 Au shipped. I scored one shipped for mid $300's from memory, but I did a lot of looking until Imanaged to score a bargain one.

EASY to fit, but you will need a special allen key to undo the main nut, and it's a bit less than an 8mm, so I just ground one down a little and it worked a treat. Unhooking airbags is dead easy, and anyone on here with Erwin or Elsawin manuals can help you out with the directions, but it's pretty easy. The trickiest thing are the clips on the horn pad, where you need a short flat blade, and a mirror to slide the clips outwards to unhook it. THAT was a bit tricky.

If you have DSG you'll have a bit more to hook up, and you'll need to buy a DSG friendly wheel, as it has cutouts in the back. Also, some german wheels don't have the bolt holes for the steering wheel buttons, so make sure you know what to look for.
