Closing power windows with remote

I've only had my 2005 Mark V Golf Comfortline for a couple of weeks and I've noticed this strange behaviour (well, to me) in the last few days when closing the windows using the remote control.

As you know the Golf will let you close all windows (and sunroof) at the same time from outside the car by holding down the Lock button on the remote. Very handy feature.

Only last couple of days though I've noticed when using this method to close them the driver side window will reach the top and then straight away go down again to 3/4 open position.

If I get in the car again and manually operate the up button this driver window goes back up and stays up.

Is this behaviour normal?

Is the problem permanent or intermittent? The reason I ask is because Mischa's function went a bit weird at one stage; his windows wouldn't all work, some would stop, etc. But I don't think it kept happening.

doubt its normal... our jetta has this function and closes all windows at the same time.
only way to open them again is to press and hold the unlock button on remote, or get inside and open them.

Probably something to do wiht your rollback feature i suspect.

It didn't do it for the couple of weeks of having the car but last week I think it does it every time. I was beginning to think it had something to do with the warmer weather and the car is suggesting I keep one window partly down for circulation.

Rollback feature? I don't remember reading that in the manual (though I admit I didnt read it cover to cover )

Anyway, put your windows up normally, with the piece of cardboard vertical as "resistance" (mimicking children's fingers etc). the window should sense a load and bring itself back down.

Sure it might work normally. But if it is doing it without the resistance there...........

Very strange.

I just went out to the carport to try it (car hasnt been driven since this morning), got in the car and wound down all the windows, then got out and closed them with the remove. It behaved normally (driver window stayed up).

I just gave this a try but used a piece of soft rubber hose instead of cardboard. It went all the way up and stayed up
Maybe this model doesnt have the safety feature.
Which then makes the earlier behaviour even more mysterious ...

Put a voltmeter on your battery when you're doing this, it could be dropping enough that the drivers window motor is going over it's preset limits.

As schoona pointed out, it's the safety feature built in where it's sensing too much resistance so it rolls back. Because you have four windows and a sunroof closing at the same time you would be getting voltage drop and as the voltage drops the power required to close the windows increases which is also what occurs when there is a obstruction.

Does your car have comfort one touch opening and closing on all the windows or just the drivers door? The car does not set the limits on a window unless you have the comfort one touch opening and closing turned on. If you only have it turned on for the drivers window then this points to this problem.

You can reset the comfort opening and closing settings by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. DON'T open the drivers windows using the switch as this will set the limits and enable the one touch open and close.

Once the car is powered back up test the opening and closing a few times from the remote. If it works ok set the limits by opening and closing the drivers window from inside and test the one touch operation. Also test the other windows to see if they have this feature enabled, my guess is that they are not enabled for this feature (you require a vagcom to do this unless you have a full height MFD to set it yourself).

If the problem doesn't occur again then it means the limits were out for some reason, if it occurs again it points to the battery starting to falter when are opening and closing with 5 motors running. It could also be that the drivers side window is sticking a little bit or a combination of the two.

Window prob expanded and gave resistance.
try polishing edges of window to see if prob goes away.

Hi Petito,

It is something to do with the window control divice. My new car did this sometime. Rather than changing the part, I "reset" it by holding down the "lock" button for more than 3 seconds after the windows reach the top, then press "unlock" til them open fully for another 3 more seconds, repeat if required... It works for me.
