Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    my cousins golf
we both have 2007 2.0 TdIs
anyway so im not sure how fast i was going but im estimating 40/50kms and then slammed the brakes only to hit him...
thought it would just be some front damage for me and rear for him but i kept driving cause there wasnt anywhere to stop immediatley and by the time we stopped there was no coolant in the tub...
so somethings happened to the radiator right...i dunno if its just a hose or the actual unit...but my question is if it has damaged that should there be anything else i should look out for damaged on? apart from the front bumper and my number plate of course...

also... how hard do you have to hit something for the airbags to go off? by what ive said do you think they should have gone off?

    thanks

I may be wrong ... but I've heard the air bags go off at anything over 15kph. Anyone got clearer knowledge of this?

Generally it's over ~25 but this is into a solid concrete wall. Hitting the back of another car whilst both cars are moving in the same direction would require a much harder hit.

There are multiple sensors involved in the deployment and depending on how the crash occurs they may not deploy, for example side airbags won't normally deploy in a frontal accident and vise versa.

If the airbags are going to deploy so do the pyrotechnic pretensioners on the front seatbelts a fraction of a second ahead of the airbags to pull you back into the seat.

Airbags mustnt depoy under normal circumstances under 28kph.
As Maverick says some other factors too, like hitting a dead solid object..

If you didnt smash your face into the windscreen then those parameters were not met.

I would suggest you open the hood for a look at what is damaged and tell us. Only you can see whats damaged.

Sounds like you were driving too close.

i tried to have a look
and to be honest i dont really have an idea bout whats what
you cant see anything down the front when the hood is open because things are in the way and you cant see under neath because of the protector thing they have...
oh well its out of my control now insurance has it
hope it doesnt take too long

I am unsure what you are expecting - mockery or sympathy.

Yeah, ... I'm certainly not giving sympathy.

Someone ran into the back of my Golf a while back. All fixed and as good as new but still, it's really not that hard to drive at a safe distance!

I really don't know which was dumber...Driving too close, Rear ending your mate, or driving around before THOROUGHLY inspecting your car for damage. Radiators are very easily damaged, and even a small hit can hole them.
