OK, so i took the car down to South Yarra Service centre in Richmond (luckily very close to home) and the guys ran the diagnostics on it. apparently it had 1 erroneus temp reading which threw the light, it's been reset and there is a 50/50 chance it will go again, and if it does they are gonna replace the temp sensor.

all in all, pretty happy with the service, was in and out in under 10 mins.

I had the same problem on my R32 about 2 months ago and I had to bring the car in 3 times to get it fixed. They just reset the error for the 1st time and it lighted up again after about 2 days. For the 2nd time, they reset the code again but knew there is something wrong and asked me to bring the car in again to have a full diagnostic. They had the car for 2 days for the 3rd try and replace the oxygen sensor and it seems to fix the problem.

Cool, good thing for me is that the service centre is about 700m from home, so its not a hassle at all to pop in if it lights up again.

Oh well, just went to the supermarket, and lo and behold the light is on again, looks like ill be getting a SYVW car to rally around in for a few days, it better not be the yellow beetle i saw earlier.

How many km's the car done?

This warning light can also come on when the DPF is blocking up & has to have a service mode run on it to clear it out.

It's common, as alot of diesel's are city car's & never get to operating temp or get the entire exhaust to operating temp too.

The are also just putted around town too & never get a chance clear the cobweb's out.

this seems to be a common problem in all vw's buy the looks of it..
i too had the same problem in my 2000 new beetle..
read in my manual that i needed to go see a qualified person, they cleaned it out for me and said that it is a common fault and i carried on driving it, i managed to drive down to nsw and back and when i got home it came back on then i had to replace it along with another sensor that had also gone as well

Car has done about 11,000 although as far as city car goes, it does do a bit of highway, i drove it over to Mt Gambier last week, and one would hope that 11 hours of sitting at 110km/h in 2 stints would have burned any sooty deposits from the DPF.

There is a speparate DPF warning lamp too.

                  Will hopefully know more tomorrow.

Id kill for another smart car, they rock !!!!!

My TSI threw that light up when I first drove it back up to Adelaide from Melbourne. It went into limp home mode, and was eventually traced back to some random A/C fault. They reset the brain and it's been OK ever since. Never ever found out what actually tripped it.

Better safe than sorry, I guess...

A lot of DPF cars had faulty sensors which told the brain that the DPF was clogged and needed re-generation when it was actually fine.

So wouldn't it just do the 1000rpm idle thing?

Mine does this about every two weeks, that I notice anyhow, and my car certainly gets "up to temperature" each drive!
