I'm a young female who likes to drive and I'm thinking about getting the Golf GTI MV. I've never owned a VW before and I'm looking for a RELIABLE car - I don't want to be left on the side of the road! I don't know anyone who owns a VW so I'm hoping to get some feedback from those of you who already own this car. Also what would be a good price, given the current market for a GTI 5dr 6spd DSG MY09, metalic paint, parking sensors, leather?
Mine's a GT rather than a GTI, but after 18 months has proved very reliable with no 'strandings' at all. As gerhard said, VW assist is only a call away should you need it.
But (and others can confirm this) I've not read of one full breakdown on this or other forums.
My only incident remotely close to a breakdown was when a random electronic fault occurred. Even then it went into 'limp home mode' - where the car still runs (albeit with reduced power) but will still safely get you home.
As mentioned, the auto locking when you drive off, and the lights that stay on for a while after you lock the car and go on when you unlock the car, are both worthwhile features for many folks.
In addition, the Golf is an exceptionally safe car with a full set of airbags, a very high crash rating, and in the GT and GTI a full compliment of electronic swerve/slide countermeasures. Plus emergency braking assist as well.
The Electronic Stability Control is a very under estimated feature. The car will help pull you out of nasty situations when you really need it - just before you're likely to knock a hole in the scenery. I've seen it in action and it's a brilliant safety item. No driver, no matter how skilled, is able to apply braking to individual wheels, thereby pulling the car back into line. Simply fantastic.
There's not many other cars I'd recommend to anyone. Go get one!

sorry to burst everyones bubble here. But if you're after a car that doesnt rattle, then dont get a gti They rattle everywhere and lve had mine for 3 yrs now. The rattles are hard to find too. Also a mate just bought his second one and its in bits at the dealers trying to find a rattle in his dash. They're now saying it could be a structural fault. What crap to go through when you fork out sub 40k for a euro car built in S.Africa. Not worth it in my opinion, but others will disagree. Pm if you want to hear more horror stories cause l have plenty!!!!
I have had my GTI for 9 months (5 Door from SA) and it has no rattles or other noises.
Its finish is much higher quality than my wifes Mazda 3.
I drove the WRX, XR5, MPS and Astra Turbo before I bought the GTI and do not regret my choice.

i have learnt to live with it. also depends if you have supernatural hearing abilities. my wife doesn't hear the rattles at all...but i do. the joy of driving my gti (99%) far outweighs the slight rattle (1%).
good luck finding a car which doesn't rattle after a while for under $150k. i've been in an m3 with 60000kms and it rattled. a new 135i - and it rattled after 1 month. a b7 A4 2.0T with 50000kms and it rattled. my bros mkv R32 built in germany and it rattles. again - could just be my super hearing abilities.
i would much rather any of the above cars than forking out $10-15k less for a japanese car - which would rattle even more.
I love my MKV (mine is a GT Sport), and I think the service I get from my dealer (Osborne Park VW) is great.
But I called VW Assist yesterday to get them to help me with a removing a stripped wheel bolt, which was preventing me from removing my front wheel.
I swear the function of that service is to ensure they *don't* send someone out unless you're in it deep... which is fine I suppose.
I happened to be at home, with the car on my driveway, but all they were willing to assist with was a tow to a dealer or a tyre place. For a stripped wheel bolt. whuh?
Apparently the drivers don't carry parts like that... but isn't that a fundamental spare for an 'assist' program?
I've since tightened up all the wheel bolts and gone to my dealer, who are removing the lugbolt and installing a new bearing and hub under warranty.
Are you aware the MKVI is coming soon?
Will you be disappointed if you have a MKV when that surfaces?
If you think you'll be disappointed, then I'd suggest not buying a brand new one - maybe look at an 08 model

I was chatting with a VW Assist person yesterday, bumped into him in Supercheap. VW Assist is NOT like RAC, it's basically a tow service and get you home service. He does nearly all the prestige car "assists", including BMW, Merc, AUDI, VW, etc.
I like the idea myself, since you don't have a person fiddling with your car who isn't trained.
MK VI GTI is way too far away to be called "coming soon"
