Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Buying tyres for the Golf - 205/55X16

Looked around for 205/55X16 tyres for the 16" X 7" VW alloys.

    Goodyear Excellence - $217
    Bridgestone ER300 - $190
Tyre Power - $170 for Toyos (Transas TEO as fitted to the Polo)
Bob Jane - Pirelli P7 $209 (told them my limit was $200 ea, said he'd split the differance @ $204, retail is $240).

    Guess which I'm getting.....

    Here are the wheels

Mate, RRP on a tyre means nothing unless you live out the back of Bourke. RRP are inflated because the price of the tyre includes delivery.

I have no idea which tyre your getting but all those prices sound exxy for 205/55x16. I was buying 205/45x16 for my Golf early this year & Kumho Exta started at $110. Pirelli Dragon were $150. I would have thought 205/55x16 would have ranged $90-$130.

    Which Bridgestone? RE001? A mate just bought 205/50x16 for $177 a corner.

Have you considered Falken FK452? great value for money. The other tyre I personally like is the Pirelli Dragon.

I look forward to a report of what you end up with as my current car has 205/55x16 on it too.

    PS: nice moccasins

BTW: on a 7" rim, have yo considered 215/55x16? Not sure what your speedo is like but mine is so far wrong it needs a bigger diameter tyre.

Mate, I've got two sub-teenage kids. I'll play guessing games with them but that's where it stops.

Toyo Teo? I hope not - it looks quite pedestrian.

P7? Looks Ok but aren't they noisy (or is that P6?)

        Bridgestone what? Supercats?

Cynicism aside, do your research and shop around to get the best price. You'll find that serious tyre outlets will be happy to price match and offer advice and recommendations to get the business.

If you need 205/55-16 (perfect on a 7" rim) then fitting a 205/45-16 will mean your speedo and odometer will be more than 5% out (too fast) while a 215/55-16 will be 2% too slow. For the uninitiated, this is not good and potentially, illegal from an insurance POV. Caveat emptor.

Having run P6, P6000, Dragon and now PZero, I can vouch that anything Pirelli will represent good value for money. They are sometimes not the cheapest, but they are very, very good.

Alternatively, I've heard only inconsistent reports about Falken, Toyo and Bridgestone (noise, wear and inconsistent handling).

I've said it in other threads, bump for a set of Yokohama A.Drive R1s and you will not be disappointed. I cannot recommend them more highly.

Oops. You didn't get the full story.
I had 205/45x16 on 16x7" rims on my Golf Cabrio Mk3.5 (OEM was 185/60x14 IIRC)

I have a Skoda Octavia now & it has 205/55x16 on 16x6.5" rims. The speedo is 10kmh fast when travelling at a GPS tracked 100kmh. This annoys the daylights out of me, which is why I'm thinking 215/55x16 if the tyres ever wear out.

And if you did correct your speedometer your odometer will be over reading by 10% which would mean for every 1000kms traveled your odometer shows 1100.

I have the fix listed at www.my-gti.com under reference, still doing some testing but it seems fine so far.

I am going to get some Yokohama A-Drive R1 next time for the TDI. They were great on the MKIV.

Hey mate just a quick question...I've been looking around for tyres a lot and most people I rang (around the Ryde area) won't talk to me about Kumho's for anywhere less than like....180! Whereabouts did you do your shopping?

That was at Tempe Tyres. A lot of people don't like Tempe but they've always been OK with me (and I'm just your standard WASP).

                      Also try

Looks like the Eastern states get much better (lower) price than here in Adelaide.

I would have bought Pirelli Dragon at that price.

Ah! Adelaide - same as Canberra - $20-$40 a tyre more.
