Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Has anyone had a custom CAI done on their MKV???

I'm getting one done tomorrow, it will be joining up to my engine cover intake section, then the piping will extend down behind the left hand side fog light.

    Hoping it comes out nicely

will post pics once its done

A proper cold air intake takes the air from as low down as possible, where the air is cooler, as in the original post. Most people that get a CAI on a golf get a freer flowing piece of pipe than the standard intake, but it's mainly for noise - you might get a very slight increase in top end, but it's minimal.

I tried out the carbonio intake for a few months but now I have gone back to the standard intake as the Carbonio just didn't feel like an improvement, more of a hinderance.

I have the Carbonio intake on my GTI. Certainly no hinderance to me!
I fitted the full exhaust at the same time.
I am more than happy with my car.

i had a Carbonio and its bloody useless. i only paid $50 for it and i still feel ripped off! its really the panel filter that will have the slightest effect.

on my GTI now i have a Neuspeed CAI. its made it a bit more linear with slightly more top end but it sounds freaking awesome! turns a lot of heads

heres a vid i took of it on my phone...

I finally had it done yesterday

Big thanks to Shift Performance in Lansvale!

It took around 2-3hrs, but I am really happy with the end result!

It took around 10mins to remove the engine cover, removed the stock panel filter, then resealed the cover where the panel filter used to sit using vacuum line.

We then removed the skin underneath the car (thank God for the hoist) so we could insert the APEXi filter from underneath.

The piping sat beautifully, and this is the end result:

Under load you can really hear the spooling sound, and I can notice the slightest increase in top end power. Love it

nice work! thats like no other set up i have seen. its sort of a hybrid between and evoms/ neuspeed and the stock air box. i recon it would be heaps quieter too.

to be honest i still think it will be a bit restrictive making it go through the stock air box and and then through the stock plastic turbo piping which is from the engine cover to the turbo.

still that looks like a very clean install. got any sound clips??

I considered that mate, but it would mean losing the engine cover... a big no for that lol!

you can still keep it... providing you dont mind hacking the back of it off with a jig saw. seen it done and it looks alright. you can also get a number of nice aftermarket engine covers from Neuspeed and Evoms

where does the APEXi filter sit? Is down low in the front qtr panel, behind the fog light?
