Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 15000k service and avc9000 install

had my service done yesterday and got my satnav system installed.
didn't put in the camera as i have a white jetta and thought the huge black camera would just look awful.... besides... figure i already have the reversing sensors so wouldn't need the camera.

all up it cost me $455, with genuine vw parts and oils etc.

first impressions of the satnav unit is good.. ipod connector works (with wifes iphone it changes to ipod only.. no phone usage whilst plugged in) haven't tried it with a normal ipod as yet. fudged our way around the menus (without looking at the manual of course) to play some songs. seems easy to use.
used the satnav today for the first time.... (using tom tom) is more accurate than i thought it would be... shows up street names as you near them, can be set to show police, hospitals, petrol stations etc etc.... its also good how you can change the voice on the unit as i would hate to be stuck with some of them, they'd get annoying real quick.

        Yeah they are good value.

I am very happy with mine.

You should go buy some DVD music. It tends to be way cheaper than the normal albums because less people are interested in it.

I got like 5 dvds from jb hi fi for $40. Including big name artists new stuff.

I cant believe your letting the service monkeys touch the car.

To earth it you just pull it out and run a wire to the wire on the back of the unit that says "HANDBRAKE" on it. Attach the end of that wire to the bolt that you will find on the left hand side or right hand side if you remove the fuse box covers. Just loosen bolt.... wrap wire tightly around it... screw down hard. Sorted.

You don't even need to go to that amount of trouble. The AVC chassis itself is an earth, you just need to attach the handbrake wire to the AVC. It even comes with the appropriate screws for you to screw into the chassis!

does this work the same as aftermarket DVD players? If police pulls you over while there is picture on it its a fine. Maybe that's why they didn't connect it

The way it's supposed to work is that the picture only works when the handbrake is applied (ie. you are not moving). So, if the cops pulled you over you would have the handbrake on anyway it shouldn't be a problem. They'd have to be going alongside watching through the window while you're driving along.

Wouldn't suprise me if they actually do that. They can always ask to put your handbrake down. Thats why my stereo has a button that says "disp" and it turns the piture off and displays the normal background like when you are listening to a CD

Maybe? I'll never know, since I don't have (or intend to get) a DVD player in my car. I have just seen how others have done theirs.

You're right, they would have left it disconnected so that they were not able to be held liable if the person got busted watching a DVD while driving. Technically they should have found a way to connect it to the handbrake. I wouldn't be happy paying top dollar for an install only to have it half finished.

as far as i know, that wire is supposed to be connected to the handbrake or earth. Im not sure what happens if its not connected at all. Probably no picture ever?

So what you're saying is that after your handywork...I need limo tint?

H...I went to Tim's place and he was most helpful in getting the camera set up. We were able to put it into the valance (directly under the Rego Plate) and between the two exhaust pipes. It looks mint!

Many thanks for your assistance the other week.
