Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Air compressor dead !

I have a 2005 V golf comfortline. just out of warranty and My air compressor has just died.. does anyone know of any issues with them in general or am I just the unlucky one?

Thats bad luck man. I had some A/C issues with my Polo, and I know of other dramas with both the Polo's and the Golfs. How far out of warranty are you??

MKV air con systems have been quite problematic. How far out of warranty are you? Sometimes VW will have mercy on your soul and still cover it for you. Doesnt hurt to ask anyways

Yep i know the 06 models had issues, my wifes old trendline had done 2 before 15,000km's i'd kick up a stink as they replace a lot of them.

If the car was serviced at a VW dealer the whole time and preferably the same one he has a much better chance of this by talking to them first.

Just got mine fixed (replaced) under warranty last week... I think it's a known issue. I was told to switch on aircond at least 5-10mins every week so that the oil & gas inside the system lubricate the compressor... yet not a word mentioned in the manual

Dont know why you were told that mate , the compressor doesnt clutch on them they run constant, they are vairable displacement. 2nd time round failure is normally due to the incorrect amoount of oil being thrown in and i dont just mean too little. Too much can be detrimental. Thats why when a system has been leaking you are only going to guess how much you need, which is wrong. In this case you flush the system and then fill the correct amount. Multiple failures are caused by incorrect service procedures. Ok you mentioned the 1st compressor failure. Was the system then flushed?????? The reason i ask is failure would no doubt have filings in the system. This needs to be flushed as it will go through the system again.
Gas and go really isnt the go

Thanks all for your replies so far.. its giving me more confidence to pursue the good will warranty path. The car has travelled 30,000kms in just over 3 years (3 years 3 months). It has had a full service history so I will try to argue that point also.

                    Hey all,

Had my car in at VW's and they replaced the Compressor under 'goodwill' warranty. I did not have to get angry and there was no questions asked.
                    Very impressed.

The AC system never turns off fully, it still runs @ 2% duty to keep the system lubricated.

That's super - did you think about buying the extended warranty? Might be an opportune time to do so?
