Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf GTI Mk5 2008 - Value

    Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place for this type of post, but I need some advice from the VW brains trust. I have a Golf 2008 GTI which has been great to me for the last 4 years, but am now thinking of selling and upgrading.

There are a couple of things needing to be done to it, so keen to understand if anyone would buy in this condition as a fixer-upper and for what value (looks like market for a good condition one is $10-12k).

First off - it runs completely fine, turbo still spicy and gears change smooths as butter. The not so great things:
    - The ABS / Traction control lights are on. I recently had a flat while driving on the motorway, and in the 5-10 or so mins it took me to exit to stop the car, these lights came on. I've heard tire pressure can stuff with the ABS sensor so i'm not sure if the ABS unit genuinely needs replacing or if driving for a short while on the flat messed with the sensor. Local VW dealer has told me the ABS unit needs to be replaced with parts from Germany which wont be cheap.

    - Engine light is also on (amber). I've taken it to a few different places who keep clearing it and telling me "it's fine" or "it's a sensor problem" and it comes on instantly when leaving the dealer.

    - And finally I've had some issues with sunroof drainage blockages. Despite my mechanic clearing the drains and testing water flow, if i dont have the sunroof sealed and it sits in the rain, lots of water pools around the frame of the car and can get in to the footwell. I had local VW look at it and said it'd be a bigger job as they'd need to remove the full headliner to look at it properly - so i've just had it taped up as i dont use the roof.

So what do you reckon, sellable in this state or would I need to get these things fixed up first?

    Thanks all!
