Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2.0tdi clutch pedal issue

Wondering if anyone can offer some insight into my clutch pedal problem. 2006 Golf 2.0tdi 6sp. Pedal doesn’t fully disengage the clutch, by a varying amount - sometimes can’t get it out of gear with the engine running, always have to double pump when starting off. Changes and feels fine when driving. Have replaced master (PO had replaced master too, bit SWAG brand) and slave (Topran), have bled it to death (gravity, pump and open, back fill), not change. Can’t get any air out of it. 20k km on it and hasn’t changed but is getting very annoying. When I did the slave, friction plate and fingers looked fine, but didn’t measure the former. If there was an adjustment I’d do it, there isn’t I don’t think?

I don’t want to replace the clutch, and am not convinced it will definitely solve the issue. I would if I was sure I guess, but don’t have the budget to keep throwing parts at it. It wouldn’t explain it being intermittent. I guess air would but I’ve hit a bit of a wall and would’ve thought it would’ve worked it’s way out anyway (I’ve bled a good 50-100 clutches - I’m a farm mechanic).

Has anyone else had persistent pedal issues? I’ve read someone tried 4 different masters and found another brand that solved the issue, anyone had similar?
