If you put the wrong oil in the engine and you have a problem that could be related to the oil then VW won't cover the warranty. They are very specific about the correct oil being used.

All you need to do is ensure that it meets VW 504.00/507.00 and you won't have a problem. 504.00 supersedes 502.00 and all 504.00 oils meet 507.00 requirements and vice versa so they will have 504.00/507.00 on the bottle. If they don't have this on the bottle don't buy it.

I wouldn't spend that much, you can get cooking oil cheaper and you can even get ones that are good for your engine and low in saturated fat.

well I ended up buying Fuchs Fully Synthetic 10w-50 oil for the top up..

I'll address it at my 15k service due in a couple of months..

Mixing different brands of the same technology oil (mineral/semi-synthetic/synthetic) is not overly recommended but acceptable but mixing different grades is not recommended especially not when the oil you are mixing in doesn't meet any recent VW standards (or any) as most of the oils in 502.00 are 5W-30/40 and a few 0W-30's but no 10W-50's.

It may not cause problems but I wouldn't risk it as VW are specific on oils for a reason and spend a lot of money on testing oils to ensure they don't cause engine damage or excessive wear. It may not even cause problems now but in years to come, just get your dealer to top it up or get an oil change done now for around $150, it's cheap insurance doing extra oil changes especially before the first service.

If you visit this page there is a link to a pdf document that talks about VW's oil requirements (this document is prior to the introduction of 504.00 and 507.00 standards and covers engines from 1998 to 2006).

The document in part states

"Only if the level of the oil is at or below minimum and no oil that meets Volkswagen oil quality standard VW 502 00 is available, may you top off with a high quality oil, preferably synthetic-based that meets ACEA A3 specifications, but only in viscosity grades SAE 5W30, or SAE 0W40.

However, between oil change intervals, never top off with more than a total of 0.5 quart (0.5 liter) engine oil that does not conform to Volkswagen oil quality standard VW 502 00.

If you use engine oil that does not expressly conform to Volkswagen oil quality standard VW 502 00, very serious and very expensive damage to your vehicle’s engine can occur. Engine damage caused by using the wrong engine oil is not covered by your Limited New Vehicle Warranty."
