  • Sunroof wind deflector ??

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing a wind deflector to suit the sunroof on the GT Sport. Does anyone happen to know the name of the brand of sunroof VW use (ie Hollandia ....etc) Mine is a 2008 model with tilt / slide function sunroof, car manufactured in South Africa. The distributor has advised me that the deflectors he has are made in Germany by Climair. If anyone happens to know a part number for these sunroofs or any other details on them that I could use to determine if the deflector will be suitable could you please let me know.

    Thanks
    Russ

i thought all sunroofs had an inbuilt deflector that lifts up when you slide open the roof?? or are you talking about an add on to the front of the sunroof that bolts onto the roof itself?

The sunroof in mine doesn't have an inbuilt deflector as you describe. I am talking about an external add on which will fit at the front of the opening attaching to the roof with double sided tape. Many years ago I had a sliding aftermarket sunroof fitted to an older model Ford Falcon, it had the deflector attached to the roof as I have described and from memory I don't recall ever having any buffeting in the cabin as I have with the Golf. That is the reason I am wanting to fit one. All I need to know is the brand name of the sunroof VW use in the Golf (or a part number) so I can confirm with the overseas seller that the deflector will fit.

My 2008 R32 has a deflector built in. In lifts up at the front when you open roof.
It is part of the frame assembly.

Thanks for the replies. I might have to check out another VW with a factory sunroof then and see what this built in deflector looks like because mine definitely doesn't have it. I have spoken with the salesman and told him about the issue with mine, he gave me the number for a sunroof fitting company in Sydney and when I spoke to someone there they seemed to think that the buffeting of air was a normal trait of sliding sunroofs and winding down a window or adjusting the size of the opening was the only way to fix it. Just wondering if either of you find the built in deflector helps with buffeting in the cabin, I know with mine that if I don't wind down a window in the car when the sunroof is opened in the sliding position the effect it has on your eardrums is almost deafening (it really is that bad !!)

              okay.....

#1 If your sunroof is OEM, it will have the deflector already installed. In the closed positon, the deflector sits under the glass. As the glass slides back the deflector is released, and is raised to a point where it has it's trailing edge higher than the roof line. In this manner it attempts to deflect passing air (notice I didn't say wind...otherwise some one might say I should have said flatulence...oh never mind )

#2 There is considerable turbulence noise with the roof open. The only way to reduce this is to partially close the roof, or drop one of the windows (I drop the rear windows by about 2 cm) to reduce the air pressure in the cabin.

We had a Pajero with an OEM sunroof...and never had air turbulence noise like this before.

I understood this to be a factory fitted sunroof (that's what I paid for) will have to check up on that. The main thing I am trying to find out is the brand name of the sunroof as I have come across and overseas distributor selling German made deflectors to suit the Golf but I have to try and confirm the details to be sure it will be the correct fit. As far as wind in the cabin is concerned the sunroof is great for releasing it as well as letting it in.

You should have one already built in.....

                  Sun Roof Closed

My mate has a 325Ci that does the same thing. It has a deflector but its not helping much.
Just drop your windows down a bit because the deflector you want will ruin the way the car looks. I hate those things

I don't have that on mine! But if it doesn't really do anything then there's not much point anyway is there??

I'll rephrase..... it comes on at 30km... then stops after you get faster then 32km.... hardly noticeably unless you're driving at that speed.

close it a bit and then there's no buffeting at all

Thanks again for the reply, I just had a closer look at mine when it's open and it does have the deflector everyone is describing but the difference is mine does bugger all to ease the buffeting in the cabin no matter what speed. It's probably worse when going quicker and the only way to make it stop is to open windows slightly. I have mentioned it the dealer so when it goes in next week they can try it for themselves.

My 08 GTI is going in for its first service on thursday and ive complained about the 'air hammer' effect with the sunroof open. Its AWFUL. We've not used our 2k sunroof since we bought the car it's that bad. Opening 1 window is not enough i don't think... you need 2-3 open

I've had 3 cars now with sunroofs and this is the worst of the lot. My other car is a 1999 BMW M5 and its wind deflector works great.. you dont hear a thing.

I dare say they're not going to be able to do anything about it as it does not look faulty... it's just the design of it, so it looks like a letter to VW HQ will be in order, but i want to give them the opportunity to fix it first.

Seems to be an isssue across afew forums.
Mine does it and "hammers" bad over 70kph, so I normally close it a bit or just leave the rear up.
